started clearing after you left tho.
i've had the same thing happen on a trip out there - perfectly calm & clear at the start then in clouds over the (probably) most scenic part then opens up again by French Pass.

Keep the reports coming along Mr Jatz.

Was a good ride, love the house, that exit up out of your place had a few interesting corners but all went well.

I'm trying to master the art of building 'challenge sections' into my roads
I've been meaning to bring the dozer down and knock a bit of the grade out of that section , but I kinda like the way you have to take a deep breath and psyche that bit out ....so mabe i'll just leave it how it is.

    Clarence reserve......pt 1

    Another instalment....
Seeing as how the boy and I went there last year and MrsJatz wanted to have a look, the Clarence reserve was visited last weekend

Got up earlyish on the saturday morning and saddled up for the ride to Kaikoura .
Here's a couple of pics to set the scene
Seal.... a necessary evil, kind like work really

    Nice day though

After a wee detour to Spring creek to drop off some stuff for the boy and some brekky at macas .
    We headed over Redwood pass

I remember it having more gravel last time

Anyway..... it was a nice day for a cruise down the coast to Kaikoura for a drop a fuel and a leg stretch before getting on the Inland rd and the good stuff

After signing in and chatting to the nice man there, who gave us a lollipop each (Mmmmmm lollipop ) things got interesting.

    Just after the turn off..

and the road starts the climb to blind saddle

Go through the saddle and head down towards Seymore / Herring creek

We got down to Bluff Dump hut and had a brew and caught up with some friends who were in there in 4wd's. Hi Tony
Then it was riding down the river bed towards the Clarence river.
    there was some fords

We got to the fork in the track and headed over the hill towards Quail flat. Through the gate with the "DANGER no entry " tape and over the hill

and there was a locked gate ah well, it happens, so we backtracked to the intersection where we caught up with cromagnon and friend. They headed off to look at the locked gate while we carried on down the creek towards the Clarence.

Went past Quail flat campground and found a nice wee camp spot by the river. Did I mention it was HOT!!! ? It was, so we had a wee swim (does it count as a swim if it was only 4 seconds)
Anyway.... here's Casa Jatz for the night

Spent the evening watching some wild goats accross the river and dealing to a cheeky red with a fruity nose from Marlborough

    Clarence reserve......pt 2

Got up earlyish again and after a nutritious breakfast of coffee we packed up and headed out.

    Things started well

There's something about riding in the early morning that I like, maybe it's the light

this is heading back up Seymore stream

We headed up towards Palmer hut, I missed out on doing this last time, so was looking forward to it.
What is it with cattle ? why don't they GET OFF THE FREAKING TRACK !!, a couple started getting quite stroppy with me. rant off
Anyway we climbed up and over a hill.
MrsJatz was overcome with the majesty of it all

or maybe it's a bug in the eye

we droped down to old willows hut and then climbed up and over another ridge and back down to the Clarence

Cromagnon wasn't there he was supposed to have the billy on so we made do.
Here's the view from the verandah at the hut....foul aye

All there was to do now was turn around and head back the way we had come.

    Seymore stream again

The temp on my dash was 35 deg. by this stage it was good to find a bit of shade for a bit of a chinwag. I was actually envious of the people in thier 4wd's with air con, but it didn't last long

There is some impressive rock formations in there

then it was a steepish climb back up to Blind saddle

the view from near the top

    Just the downhill now

A quick fuel up in Kaikoura and it was just a drag home up the coast

    Thats it for this instalment.....
    Was a good ride

Amazing the difference in temps from only a month ago. I was nearly hypothermic on the way back.

Great RR. So I guess they've locked the gate so you can't see the slip. Pity you didn't walk as it's only upthe top of the next hill.
Isn't it funny the difference in environments between Golden Bay/ West coast to Marlborough even tho its only a few hours ride apart. Best of both worlds - wet & wild & dry & dusty

We thought it was hot at 17 deg at Palmers Hut.
But you would have had a view from Blind Saddle?

The locked gate is on the hill overlooking Quail flat shearers quaters. We followed the stream down from where the map board is and rode across some shingle beds, to by pass the hill. From where we camped you could see the slip, kinda big aye.

For other times of the year permission to get in should be easyish to get from D.O.C. in Renwick, acording to the guy on the gate, BUT you must also get permission from the lease holder, which also should be o.k., so long as it's not calving/lambing/fire risk time of the year.I cant remember his name just now, I'm sure D.O.C. would help out with that
