I went onto Protecta's website and did a quote thing and that gave me 250ish for full cover but I hadnt put my license stuff in yet. And not sure I can put it through parents. My dad isnt a motorbike rider and has no bike license.

Sorry what I mean is, for example my olds are with Aon insurance, neither of them ride bikes, but they are able to take out a policy which is under my name but under their account, so my folks pay weekly out of their bank account and I pay weekly into theirs, works out alot easier and its alot cheaper excess wise

Do you need an actual motorbike? or will you be riding on 50km roads.
A scooter can be done for less than 1K, and riding gear for less than 500 if your smart about it.

Of course this all goes out the window above 50kmh

I'm pretty sure Colemans have a deal going where you can get a whole set of gear for about $500 and Holeshot have a set for about $700.

Obviously its not the best gear, but it should get you started.

The basic gear guide is, NEVER buy a second hand helmet, it might not be damaged but its just good practice, a dropped helmet is nothing more than an over sized beanie on your head,
Secondly (please anyone feel free to add to this or correct me, this is juts IMO), your minimum gear should be good gloves and at least a Cadora jacket, Depending where you go I guess, I picked up a cheap oxford full face helmet not to long ago brand new from a bike shop for $80, When I first brought a Jacket I kinda got ripped off, I paid something like $700 for a Rev'it Jacket but if you scour trademe there are some really good products out there, my recommendation is a Qmoto leather jacket which off the top of my head is something like $500 and they are AWESOME.

Agree 100%. I used to be in a cycling team so I nkow the damge a single drop can do to a helmet. The helmet was a definate brand new. Was planning on the $140 one for motomail. As well as a 150ish textile jacket and pants then some basic golves and boots.

Make sure you try your helmet on DONT BUY WOTHOUT TRY. and also might be a good idea to test ride a GN alot of people comment how they get Bored with The GN's rather quickly and with your now increased budget you may be able to get an IL4 which you most likey wont get bored with and will easily sit at motorway speed + passing and beyond

    Good luck
agree with this, I would probably sell my vgc old VT250 for $1500 (is only sitting in storage atm anyway, and you'd get classic insurance!), but then you have to add on the basics. Rego is a large part of that, and I'd be surprised if cheap bikes come with much rego, same for tyres, perhaps battery, few other bits and your cost goes up a lot!

Not try to discourage you, but plan a proper budget (not an optimistic one, so add the 10 contingency) and go from there.

    My estimates:
    Gear $500
Insurance $200 for 3rd party, or full classic
Rego bout $350pa for small bikes now is it?

and cheap bike would need a thorough check out (join the SMC, and they should be able to help) of bearings, tyres, engine etc to get a better idea of any hidden costs.

The main reason I was going for a GN 250 is there are heaps of parts for them so if it breaks down its easy to repair. And there known as great begginners. Plus. I could sell it in 6 months after saving a bt and get a better bike if I get bored. Its just being as I need it soon im not gonna try for anything major just yet.

Mystic13 is offering his bike which is a volty 250 which I am about to call him about price and stuff. But esentially im spending as much as possible on bike and then getting the gear over the next few weeks.
