DT175 Pack Rack

Hello Chaps

Does anyone know of a supplier that can provide me with a pack rack for an old DT175? (1980)

I don't think you can buy them new anymore (after trawling google) but wondering if anyone makes custom versions? Possibly in the Wellington area?

Packracks are ok you're going for the retro look & only want to carry your lunch to work. However if you want to do some adv touring on the DT I'd recommend some panniers (with basic racks) or a giant loop type setup instead.

Giant Loop is a brand, the bags made by them are a big upside down U shape that hangs over your seat/rear fender. All you need then is to make sure your exhaust heat sheld is up to the job of keeping things from melting if they press on it. The bags aren't cheap though.
I'm using the AltRider version of the Giant Loop stuff on my WR250R, also not cheap but they are good, and waterproof.

Some Giant Loop stuff is also available through the MotoMox man too I just found out.
The small day tripping Giant loop Mojavi Saddle Bag has just been listed, but that is just a small day tripping bag, never get overnight stuff in that one..

Have a look at a Yamaha AG farm bike. I think.... they share some common heritage with the DT's. Check out the rack & how it is fitted. Carry a tape measure and note mounting points etc. You never know your luck.
If one those racks can be made to fit then you can customise it for panniers or pack.
Just a thought.

Yep. All you really need is something that keeps the bags off the exhaust & supports the lower back corners so the bags don't flop around & into the wheel:



Have a look at the build thread I put up on ADV: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=865994 With custom machined mount points & Cr-Mo tubing those may be getting a bit flash but you could make a simpler, cheaper version with some 12mm solid round bar & a few bits of scrap. The tricky bit can sometimes be getting a strong mount point for them, pax footpeg mounts usually give a good spot at the front but at the back some funky bracketry is sometimes needed depending on the subframe.

I've got Andy Strapz panniers that I like but if you are on a budget there's lots of bags that can be made to work. Chris had some army surplus ones on his 690 last weekend that looked pretty good.
