    Hand-me-downs?

    I have an idea.

for those of us that have been riding a long time, would we want to hand down our old unused gear to the students and n00bs among us?

it would provide a level of protection for them, and strengthen the motorcycle community

Been doing it for the last 4 years already! Have so far given out a complete set of MX gear, 2 road helmets, 2 pairs gloves, road boots as well as a bike. I would rather pass them on to someone who needs them then sell them.

Helmets shouldn't be passed on unless they are a good fit for the new rider. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=930E5LiRobw
Great thing to do, maybe have a "hand me downs" thread. Just keep in mind some protective gear, once past its prime may not be ideal to give to someone else to use.
If it couldn't hurt it wouldn't be fun.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy a motorbike, and that's pretty close.

I had 2 new helmets that used to hurt my head after an hour - drove me nuts. They were basically new and had never been dropped so I passed them on to a friend for her and her mum to wear when they go pillion for a short ride for coffee etc. Their husbands are experienced riders and can judge what fits and what doesn't. My gear is either as new and rejected by me or worn and then thrown away.

    Thumbs up

Well then carver, go on, make it happen, create the "hand me downs thread" and we'll all find something that can be safely handed on and lets make it happen.

Wouldn't it just go into the for sale at $0? Or would cashless n00bs not look there.......

I would donate my old helmet but I seem to recall I had the clever idea of coming home absolutely pissed from the pub and getting my mate to smack me around the head with a cricket bat a few months ago.

    Been there, done that...

... and got into trouble with the vifferbabe for it.
Also (plus!) #2MutantTroglodyte had a fit when I told him he couldn't get a lift on the bike no more, at all, at alll...
Serves the silly fooker right for thinking it was funny teasing me about "dangerbikes" and "murdercycles". okey:
He could have been a bit less convincing about it, eh?
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

I thought it was bad to use a second hand helmet that you got from someone else.
