Worth going the insurance route or fix myself? My first low slide accident.

hey,
today was gay. i blame the little sleep + the stupid sprinkling rain that caused me to slide through one of the corners on Owens Rd, Mt Eden at 7am this morning.
doing about 30ish kph but being sensible i started to turn the corner and before i knew it the bike was gone, whilst i followed it sliding in my non padded jacket and pants.
heres the corner:


so out come was this:








bike wont seem to start properly, almost like it has a dead battery, roll start fine though.
steering is slightly bent, like when you stake a push bike and need to sit on the front wheel and twist them to get back in line, is that serious on a motorbike though?

or find 2nd hand cheap parts + labour...

tough call, and since still a noob am left scratching my head. worst part about this story is that i have/had a buyer to get the bike next week as im headed back to Oz but due back mid year, so maybe hold on to it..... ah decisions,

Whenever I bent up the steering on a bike I always got a professional to fix it. Can't be having with dodgy steering at warp factor 9...

Lots of the rest you could easily do yourself by the looks of those pix...

insurance it....You wont know what will pop up if you only fix what you can see (or feel)

Take it to a proper bike mechanic and have them take a look at it. Offer to pay them an hour labour as you should get a good idea about the real damage. As has been pointed out already, there may be more damage that you can't see, but something that only a trained set of eyes can pick out.

if you want a different bike go to the insurance, the last 2 bandits i bought were similar damage to yours and write offs

i guess insurance i can do it then forget about it. will check with the potential buyer.
maybe i can get George from motorcycle doctors to come round and assess it before making a final decision,
but the longer i leave it does it make it harder to potentially get the insurance to cover it?

I am in the same situation with my BMW - easy to patch up but as the mechanics said - there could be more damage than I can see, and it may not appear til later. Get the professionals to look at it.
BUT my excess is $250 and that is a lot less than $600.
