Te Puia Springs/Ruatoria/Waihua Bay all have fuel....so does Tolaga Bay now I think?
Last time I went around there was also fuel at Tokomaru Bay and Te Araroa. Remember that all fuel between Opotoki and Gisborne is very expensive
Time to ride
I do this ride every second year or so and I'm pretty sure there's no gas in Tologa Bay or Tokomaru. We don't bother filling at Ruatoria (WHY? baffles me) but from the size of the town it must have a gas station.
Instead we always end up crawling to Te Ararua settlement for gas. Not cheap either. Even from there heading north is a big dry zone until Opotiki I think. I could be wrong on that, these trips are always a bit hazzy.
It's a long haul any way you look at it for motorbikes with bugger all tank range, that's most of us!

Happiness is a means of travel, not a destination
I also do this ride every second year (Southern Cross Rally). I have filled up in Opotoki, Waihua Bay, Ruatoria, and Tokomaru Bay. Ruatoria is far cheaper than Te Aroroa, but for most bikes it is a long stretch from Opotoki to East Cape then on to Ruatoria. However if you are missing out the cape itself then its a easy distance from Opotoki to Ruatoria. Waihou Bay and Ruatoria both require a short diversion away from the main road, and that is probably why most riders don'r know there is fuel at these places.
Time to ride
Blimming heck, if you can't manage Gisborne to Opotiki on one tank then you've either got the wrong bike or your right wrist needs a bit of restraint...
But all that aside, work on daytime fuel availability in only a small number of locations. Somewhere on KB there's a list of servos isn't there?
328 km over winding slow roads? I know of a lot of bikes that do not have that range. My own bike would just do it on Caltex91 or Z91, but not on Mobil or BP and ceratinly not on any brand of 95.
Even your Katana 750 with a massive 20 l tank would have less than a litre left on that trip with very careful riding.

Time to ride
When we do it as a group we fill up at Gisborne and put another $10 in at Te Aroroa And thats us using a 05 daytona 955i 17.5 ltr tank... This labour weekend we will be on a 1200 Trophy 25ltr Tank so fuel comsumption will be different being a Carby model compared to the Injected daytona but will put $10 in the tank at the cape as always..
thanks guys for your input ,as im riding a 2012 v4 tuono i will have to plan fuel stops ! if i leave it in road mode i might get 220 km , im thinkin about a fuel bladder from an oz crowd that holds 4 ltrs and i can strap to back of pack rack when i think im gona need it so then i can leave bike in s mode and have more fun !
P.S The shop owner in Te Araroa is a dick. The pump is across the road from the 4 square and you need to go over there, get the guys attention, pay for the gas plus his taxes, then wait while he finishes doing whatever he's doing and saunters across the road to grace your bike with gas.
OTOH Ruatoria has a G.A.S. in it.

The servo list is 24 hour ones, I started it. There's nothing 24/7 between Gisborne and Opotiki.
Last I knew, Tokomaru Bay had 91 only (about a year ago I think), and Te Araroa sometimes has both, sometimes only 91.
You're definitely going to struggle on a Tuono... With 36 odd litres, I don't worry about gas any moreJust when I have to pay

Interesting Post.
Would anyone care to make any suggestions re accommodation to go with the fuel around East Cape?
Tolaga Bay Pub..we had a cool night there. We had that room in the middle with the big verandah.
The publican was friendly chap who cooked us a meal when we wanted it.
We found a B n B at Waihau Bay...had 1/2 a crayfish each for tea.
Very weird thing...looking at a sunset on the east cape.
