It will be a shame when SH43 is all sealed - everytime I go through a little more of the Tangarakau has succumbed to seal creap. Then we will loose it,everyman and his dog will be on it - a grannies road, part of the camper trail....25 Transit campers in convoy making it impossible to have fun on the saddles.Cafes will crop up and the posers will have their bikes lined up with leathers gleaming - shit,I hope I'm in a wheelchair by then,it's getting harder and harder for me to find true back roads where I'm all alone just enjoying myself.
Back in the 70s when it was all gravel this was truly a lost world, the road was just a single dusty track and contrary to what you would think it was possibly more populated than today - this was before the oil companies, the Post Office and the railway pulled the plug on the area...all those abandond houses you saw were lived in,although the inhabitants had six fingers and seven toes....they would come out onto the porch and watch a potential dinner go past.
I want to spend more time on those roads before it's too late - but don't worry...there's lots more roads in that area - eh DZL?
"So, you don't know how fast you were going. I guess that
means I can write anything I want on the ticket, huh?"
