    Top 100 dangerous intersections announced

So NZTA has published the Top 100 Intersections they've identified for more focus to reduce crashes and injuries (and fatalities).

    Media Release: http://www.nzta.govt.nz/about/media/...3284/news.html
Downloads: http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/hi...ections-guide/ (rhs side, 3rd link is the 100 spots - don't scroll through the 134 page doc looking for it )

Using a fair chunk of the Auckland intersections on a regular basis (several times a week), I can't help but notice some are large with full traffic light control. Exactly how are you going to improve that? It reminds me of the Ti Rakau and Trugood intersection. Traffic turning right into Trugood can turn right when space is available in straight through traffic, except, with increased crashes over the last while, for parts of the day, this option is removed, and it's either red or green right turn. I've also noticed the difference around the country, with other cities requiring more thought to give way rules, whereas Auckland takes less of a thinking approach and more reds and greens, no middle ground.

If only they spent more time and money on increasing driver skill and discipline, then they wouldn't need to "improve" intersections...

Zollner and Knackstedt sound like the surnames of people who should be designing gas chambers, errr, shower rooms.

Interesting that none of these has more than 3 deaths per year in the 2 years recorded.

Data covers 2003-2012 period, so 10 years. Of course, an intersection could have received upgrades during that time, so hard to tell whether it needs improving from it's current state, or an earlier one.

Correct you are, I read it as 2012-13, but it's actually 2003-12.

They should put more speed cameras on straight roads, that will fix it.

Some of those have been historically high risk intersections for decades

#14: Russley Rd/ Memorial Ave wont be on the list for much longer as it's being turned into a Fly-over were Memorial Ave will go over Russley Rd to the Airport.
The 1st accident the old man attended as a popo was there in the 60s...during the clean-up he picked a pile of mush...turned out to be the scalp of the guy who'd put his car under a truck.

#63: Riccarton Rd/ Clarence St has always been high risk....Riccarton Rd was once the busiest road in NZ.
Remember as a kid seeing an accident there when a truck breaked heavy for a red light...load shifted on the deck with the top of the load going through the cab and taking the drivers head clean off.

On checking my local intersections the names are very familiar. Anyone driving to New Plymouth from the north will pass three, none of which is in any way tricky. The problem is and always has been, crap driving: people pulling out of the side road either because of bad judgement, impatience, or just plain failing to look.

But you should see the measures Andy and his mates have put in place: an extended 80kph area which included passing lanes, so the passing lanes have been closed off because their bible says you don't have passing lanes in an 80kph area. I suppose one has to concede that the congenital idiots that pull out in front of traffic will now be safer because they will be hit by a vehicle travelling at 80kph instead of 100kph - perhaps.

The problem though is not caused by the roads, it is outright bad driving. So all the shagging about closing lanes and changing limits might make Knackerhead feel good but it does nothing to address the problem.
