A lower death rate can help it spread further, so can actually be worse (in the long run) than a high death rate.
(e.g. the ultimate deadly virus that instantly killed the infected person, would itself die out if there was then no way for it to spread to the next person.)
An Ebola that spread easily via a sneeze before the host dies - that'd be something to get very very scared of.
Measure once, cut twice. Practice makes perfect.
