Remade seat by Superior Saddles

I had been looking for somebody to remake a spare saddle for the VTR. It needed a bit more padding and a gripper cover for my pillion. Last ride was very uncomfortable for her as the padding is only 10mm think and the seat points down hill towards me so everytime I slowed she would slide forward.

I found Superior saddles on Trade Me. So I booked a time to pop over and meet with Roy and see if he could do what we wanted. I figured he could raise the front of the rider area as well to make it flat rather than facing down.

I took a photo of what I thought it should look like. So on getting to his place it very soon came clear he has been doing this for a long time and going by the large stack of seats he was popular. So I left it with him.

Few days later he rung and told me to pick it up to test it. Yes test it. When I picked it up it was not covered, Roy said to put plastic bags on then try it. So we did and I took it back asking for a couple of small changes. Another few days and I picked the complete saddle up.

The workmanship is very good. He added some style to it at the same time. With my pillion on last weekend we did 400ks. Huge improvement. No more discomfort from the saddle and no sliding about. Even what he did to the my part is a massive improvement. As the rider I have done about 650ks on it now and couldnt be happier with it. In fact Im going to give him the other seat to do for it but not do the pillion area so I can run my seat cowl.

All of this for just under $300.

Nice. And that is very good price for one off job.
I looked around various seat makers and similar places charge around $500. There are cheaper place like a local upholsterer but do you trust them...
In the end I paid USD129 for a new foam, gel and setacover to staple onto the DR650 base, worked well.

We looked at a DIY job. But figured as Roy would let you test it and it wont fall apart.

He has been doing it for 30 odd years, you can tell by his gear. Seems to be an old school tradesman.

I paid ~$180 just to have the foam changed in my seat which made a good difference so getting the seat customized for $300 is cheap compared to other prices I've seen.

I got Roy to customise the seat on my bike.

He was easy to deal with and the finished job was exactly what I wanted for a reasonable price.

The quality of a lot of Japanese seats has gone down in recent years due to making them thinner.

Not helped by your average rider getting heavier.

Tiz more a style thing I would say. Pillion seats mainly.

Did more riding over the weekend and its still a great thing. I see him working on her CBR seat as well. Maybe my trail bike seat to.
