    Maungatapu Track

Hi , can anyone tell me what the current state of the Maungatapu Track is? Specifically, is it open for motorcycles as of right, or with permission; is there a locked gate, and if so, is it possible to get the key or can the gate be ducked around.

    Thank you

    Cheers,
    Dave B

To the best of my knowledge the gate is currently and remains locked by the caretakers house however the local knowledge from Fran is that he is not concerned with motorbike traffic entering/exiting

Padders recently put this video up also : http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1016319

Hi Tazz, I look forward to your report once you've been through. There's nothing better than an actual experience.

It is open to motorbikes, just bypass the gate at the caretakers end. Ignore the signs.
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........

No, as opposed to someone guessing, or saying what it was like some time ago.

Hi Dave, went through there on tuesday. No locked gates and track is in great condition. Took me 45 mins from pelorus bridge into nelson.
Here for a good time, not necessarily a long time

Did it twice. Will pop up some pics tomorrow. You could get a Reliant Robin up the Pelorous side haha
There's a gap beside the gate since padders vid too, just watch your panniers.

Ended up spending a bit of time doing jumps off the drainage bunts

Hi MXNUT and Tazz, thanks for the info, that's most helpful. We have an Australian guest to take exploring and this track will be new to him.

    Right, there you have it

Access road is awesome, Pelorus side is awesome save the odd small wash out, much the same for the Nelson side. Entry and departure angles to any crossings are all nice and friendly. Would be a grade 2 easy without the steep section.

Never seen so many cyclists walking

There is a shiny new looking gate at the top which is unlocked.

Where else are you taking him around here? There are lots of interesting looking side tracks.

Where to get to start of Maungatapu from Nelson?

    Novice question time...

How do you get to the start of the Maungatapu track from the Nelson end?

    Cheers

Follow the Maitai road until you get to the car park at the end and take the road up the hill to the care takers house. Ride around gate at the top.

It was showing major signs of water damage last time I went over 3 weeks ago. Heavily rutted and rocks all over the track.

Much more than it was a few months ago.

so what you are trying to say..is it's getting better ..
like it was in the early 80s before the dam was built
it was pretty much forgotten about...
the old start of the track is now under water...

90% of all Harleys built are still on the road... The other 10% made it back home...
