What do people do when using their bike to commute to a sporting event, or gym?

    Hi Guys,

Just wondering, what do ppl do if a bike is their only mod of transportation?

I will be back on a bike soon. Just going through the test riding phase and I will use the bike as often as I can (which frees up the car for the wife).

I do quite a bit of sporting activities, from Soccer to Badminton and usually I'd take the car (mainly because of convinience).

I'd like to take the bike though, but there is one thing that bothers me.

What can I do to ride home after a hard session of exercise ie sweaty and most likely stinky too. I figured ppl just get a helmet with removal pads that can be washed, but then what happens the next day if the pads are dry? What about gear? I would hate to have my gear stink as well (is it even washable?).

I had contemplated a balaclava just to try and keep the helmet fresh, and balaclavas can be bought in bulk and obviously washed. And maybe multiple bike gear (one for the stinky commute home).

Note: Not all the places I train have a place to shower, as that technically will resolve the issue.

Hope you guys can help (I tried searching but haven't had any luck. Prob looking for the wrong thing).

    Cheers!

I can't tell how bad I smell when I ride, and I don't think other drivers can either.

I guess I'm just trying to keep my stuff clean. Maybe I just need to wear the pants and tell the missus I'm taking the car.

you will have by now worked out the users of this forum see posts like this as soft targets, hopefully you will learn padawan

always make sure you have a quick dry towel like you get in Kathmandu etc After using that to wipe off (insert numerous smutty comments here) place that along with your sports gear in a heavy plastic bag/drybag kind of thing before putting in your bike luggage.

Look, you are on a motorcycle, if you wanted to stay clean and fresh all the time you have made a bad life choice and deserve all the abuse you get

Throw the gear ( including helmet ) in the washing machine once it starts to get too stinky.

Lol I hear you. I totally forgot how ruthless some internet forums can be. Keyboard warriors everywhere!

But I got my answer, and also a better idea of what this particular forum and its users are like.

Btw if there are mods on this forum, happy for this thread to be locked.

Dont be shocked here but sweating into your helmet and leathers is quite a common thing for bike riders just riding around esp in summer and when stopped for a while.
Wait 4 months and sweating into you helmet will be far from you mind lol.

I must drop about 6 lts of fluid some days as I end up very 'thirsty' after a ride lol.Anything I wear under my gear gets soaked.
Despite this my gear does not seem to end up that bad.

Things I do that I think help.

Ride ATGATT....(If you don't know what this is please google it)

Dry out clean and inspect gear regular like.It is after all Safety equipment that does not get WOF inspected by some Energy drink swigging pie munching VTNZ monkey with a AVI cert..

I pop some of those silica pouch things you find in new shoes ect in the liner of my helmet(between the liner and shell) and in boots and jacket to help with smell and moisture.
Read somewhere tea bags work for this too well to but make for a shit cuppa afterwards lol.

Other than that welcome to one of the few woes of 'Have to' motorcycling there chap.

I used to have a bike as my sole means of transport, it helps if you have some form of removable luggage. There's a lot of options in that regard all have their plusses and minuses.

Don't wear a balaclava under your helmet, it'll make the helmet too big after a while. I'm sure that there are some here who do that but they are probably just a bit slower on the uptake.

When time and finances permit, get another helmet. You wouldn't wear the same socks all the time, (I hope), why would you wear the same helmet all the time. (Same qualification as above applies.)

Nah - Riding is all good - I commute daily and every once in a while I'll take the armour out of my gear, take the cheek pads out the helmet and chuck them through the Wash, but TBH - I wouldn't worry about it - just take a back pack with a change of clothes in them.

    Harden up

Two sets of gear. Kevlar jeans are forgiving as far as washing a lot goes. Get a size up and you can throw them over your gym/sports gears. Jackets easy, get an adventure style one and don't use the inner liner, wear some polyester top for that instead, again easy to wash.
