Throw it on hold for 12 months, you can take it off hold anytime after 3 months.
That way if you let things slide for say five months you don't have to pay anything, unlike if you had only put it on hold for the three months.

Is this really KB? Someone knows the difference between registering a vehicle and licencing a vehicle...

As for the use of that Australian slang word: rego...

As said, yes, you can licence for a day. No, it's not that economic. When you put a vehicle on hold, it has to be for a minimum of 3 months, otherwise you'll back pay.

    So:
Reg expires, you place on hold (this can be for any length of time, but if a short period then you need to keep doing it. I believe you can hold for a year, but pull off after 3 months?)
    - minimum of 3 months pass -
You buy vehicle licence for 2 days
You place the vehicle on hold
    - minimum of 3 months pass -

    and so on.

I think that's right, but mine are licenced 12 months a year.
As an option (and Gremlin probably already knows this), I understand that the three month minimum doesn't apply if the registered owner changes. So you can re-license within three months without paying the back fees if you change the owner first e.g. to a family member.

I've never done it since I'd end up with a bike with a lot of ownership changes, which could affect the resale value.

On hold with the right year showing, FTW.

I've got no vehicles regestered in my name. Bikes have dead plates, drive a work vehicle.

this only works if the vehicle is on hold. if not on hold with outstanding licencing fees then the last registered person will get a bill for the outstanding amount after change of ownership
