Matching front and rear is the easiest pair-up.

Doesn't mean it'll be a good pair up. The RF is a heavy beast, with lazy geometry. (Fixed with a gixxer thou shock)

Mines a bit of an enigma though. I run a 190/55 rear to get some extra speed from side to side too.

Interesting. Stock was a odd 170/60. 180/55 most common to fit I presume. So you the slight squishing of the 190 onto the 5.5 inch rim to give it a more pointy profile for quicker cornering?

Bit like the 180/60 rears fitted to lots of Ducatis.

Sorry about getting back to tyres ......

I think it'd be fucken horrible on standard size hoops. Can't say for sure, I chucked a 180/55 supercorsa at it the day I picked it up.

Next time it's on the track it'll be wearing a 200 section slick.

I figure that if supersport bikes do it on 5.5 inch rims, it's worth a shot. I'll prolly raise the front a bit for it though...and finally check to see if the linkage isn't the wrong way round under the shock.

I think it's best to not mix brands as they are designed to work together. On the street michelins front tyre edge is gone but unused strip on the rear while it's opposite on pirelli/metzelers. My experience anyways. Prefer michelins for street last longer and turn quicker given the steeper profile. I know few guys using pp3 front and pr4 rear which gives nice balance of grip and mileage.

The difference in unused tyre surface has more to do with how you ride than whether they're a matched set.

I went through quite a few sets of hoops on my Hornet - always changed as a matching same brand set. I did notice some tyres I'd use all the rear rubber some tyres I did not - same bike, same rider, same roads, same speeds.

Mind you I also notices that all 180's are not created equal - the narrowest was a mm or so under 180, the widest pushing 190.

Yeah I know, it's a weird thing to measure ..........

Incidentally the 180/60/17 Pirelli Diablo Rosso II on the back of my Ducati measures 189 mm on a 5.5 inch rim with 35 psi in it.......

The Front 120/70/17 Diablo Rosso Corsa measures 117 mm.

    Exciting stuff.

I bet 30% of you now head off and measure yours ...... it's better than watching TV.

I rarely get to the edge of my tyres, I get along OK. Know slower dudes on the same hoops that have no chicken strips.
