African Bikers Plan for Internal Rides

After a 6,000 km ride from South Africa to Uganda to raise school fees for Aids orphans early this year, members of the Uganda Bikers Association have decided to make their fundraising trips more often.

John Montgomery the head of the Association says they hope to make the internal rides an annual event.

Early this year, in collaboration with the UNAIDS and the ministry of Health, the twelve motorcyclists from Uganda rode 6,000km from Johannesburg to Kampala with an aim of raising both awareness and school fees for children living with HIV/Aids at Mbuya Children's Outreach Village.

The three weeks journey saw them pass through Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya and return back to Kampala on March 21.

Jeez Bob, have you proclaimed yourself king of the news forum?

Any idea on the sort of terrain they went though on that long journey?

Well the forum was my idea...

But seriously, I do earn a part-time income as newshound for a bike magazine - what goes in there is more UK-specific, so when I'm doing my daily news hunt, if I find stuff that might be interesting over here, then in the news forum it goes. As well as on the site I'm quietly developing Motobke.co.uk

As for the terrain they covered, if the photos I was supplied by Riders for Health when I was writing a feature on that charity are anything to go by, I think you could best call it "Challenging Offroading"! Very little tarmac, lots of hard-baked dirt roads, forests etc.

If you have a look in this link to the feature you will get some idea of the challenge!
