Well I got the DR home yesterday but I seem to have started breaking it already. The bracket that holds the left rear indicator/ grab rail has snapped off from the frame. I don't think it was like that when I picked it up as I didn't notice anything while attaching my (small, 2-3kg) bag to the pack rack. Any suggestions?

Damn, looks like more wear then tear so I doubt it would have lasted a lot longer. Easy fix if you have a welder, just have to pull it half apart to get at it.

In the short term, you could undo the bolt and make 2 metal plates to span the gap, drill a hole in the middle, put a small fold in each one and use the threaded part of the indicator to clamp the 2 together. Make sense? Like the pic below. If you have some alloy bar, a drill and an extra nut you should be good to go in half an hour.

I couldn't resist going for a ride, thinking that since I rode 400km yesterday another 50km today wouldn't hurt. When I got home I discovered that the broken bracket and bolt had vibrated loose. For optimum facepalm I've just looked at my own photo and realised there was no nut on the bolt.

Not entirely, but unfortunately I have none of those anyway.

I'm up there quite regularly actually but I'm hoping to get it sorted before riding that far. Eddieb has offered to take a look at it for me so with a bit of luck I'll work something out this week.

    I have a dead DR 650 here.

The reason it is dead it has a broken cam chain, and due to lack of funds the REG is dead.
the broken cam chain is my fault.
So is any one wanting a parts bike, and can make a reasonable offer, note the word reasonable.

I had a mate helping me with some building work here a few years ago. His best years were behind him but his favourite phrase was "I can fix it".

I feel the same way about bikes, although I have been wrong

I suggest it has been broken for quite some time looking at the surface rusty bits and just hanging on, would be hard to see up under there, easy fix anyway, maybe a great opportunity to improve on Suzuki and lengthen and strengthen a new bracket.
