New race track planned for Cromwell

The new race track planned to be built in Cromwell has reached the Resource Consent stage. It is planned as a 3.7 km track to be built to international standards with pit garages, grandstand, test areas etc.

A news report is online at: http://www.stuff.co.nz/southlandtimes/4104591a6570.html

The organisers have recognised that it isn't viable if used solely for racing, so are incorporating a summer test area to be used in conjuction with the current snow farm test area. They are planning for:
    Vehicle Proving (testing) facilities.
    Commercial park.
    Driver school and training facilities.
    Tourist activities.
    Corporate activities.
    Filming venue.
    Motorsport.

They are seeking submissions in support of the proposal, and these submissions close on 19th July.

I have attached a submission form and some of the details from the RMA consent application. I have a copy of the full application and am happy to answer what questions I can.

Note that a copy of your submission must be forwarded to the Central Otago District Council (address on the submission form), and to the applicant:
    Cromwell Motorsport Park Trust Ltd.
    Cubitt Consulting Ltd,
    PO Box 1378
    Dunedin.

    In Cromwell???
At first I thought why the hell would you stick it there? Then I thought about the huge range of weather conditions which could generate a fair amount of business with the vehicle testing angle they are pushing.
    Time will tell, fingers crossed.

    Why Cromwell (C'romill)?

Just look at where it is in relation to Wanaka, Queenstown, Alexandra - all rapidly expanding areas.

It's only 2 hours tops from Chez Scumdog too.

They have been talking about this for about 10 years now. there was a track design in the southland times about 2 years ago, hadn't heard much about it since.
Teretonga better get their shit sorted out otherwise they will loose alot of races to this facility.

Really??? Believe me when I say its a shithole.

A track would be cool but even though I live here I'm not that excited. No chance of me still living here when its up and running. Heard that the approximate time frame is 4-6 years till its operational.

Teretonga has some fairly simple problems that never seem to get fixed.. they have ok facilities, except for the toilets which are shit (pun not intended). For motorbikes I think the main reason it's poorly attended is the lack of organisation, the last time I was there it didnt start until about 11.30 and then we only got 1 practice (which I only got a lap of due to lack of radiator tape) and two races. When it had obviously dried out we didnt get any time to change over wheels either, so we were all finished by 3pm.

I like going to Teretonga but I felt that was a waste of money because I didnt get any time at all to make any changes or anything productive like that.

I'm sure their argument is that if there aren't enough people then no point running it properly, but it ends up being a cycle that will see no one turning up anymore I could be taken as a "bitcher" or people down there could understand the point I make, and help themselves out of this situation now that ive highlighted the problem (I don't know who to talk to about it so hoping my bit on here goes where it needs to...)

Another track in my part of the country - bring it on....The guy's planning this have put in a lot of background work & its in a real growth part of the country so should get support. It may take some time & if it lifts the game of other circuits that's great. Hopefully if they get it right they won't have the "neighbours" problems of places like Levels either.

    Indeed.

That'll be one damn fast straight. Looks to be a drag strip as well, so just like Taupo it'll be approx 800m, except that the entry to that straight is a lot faster.

An overbridge! Finally someone has clicked that you can make better use of the space available if you loop back over or under the track. That would be fun.
I know it's only a prosposed layout and all ,but what's with the point where the two circuits join, the one on the right of the page, it's a sharp 90 degree bend? where all the other bends/links are flowing curves.
Anyway, good luck you Southerners, hope it goes ahead.

I think that you would only go under the overbridge when sticking to the oval track. The full 3.7 km track would be down the main straight, into the wide RH sweeper, down the back straight, into another RH sweeper, a Left/right chicane over the overbridge, then left into the tighter part of the circuit. But the proposed layout does allow for lots of options.
