Thread: Electrochromatic Visors!

  1. #1

    Cool Electrochromatic Visors!

Check these babies out - powered helmets, with Bluetooth intercom, electrochromatic visors (like welding helmets - turn the tint on or off), and electroluminescient paint work (glows under power!):

Got to be the ultimate in helmet gadgetry!

Here's some more info from their press releases

IHT Technology Introduces Fully Integrated Bluetooth Helmet
    Options
    February 11, 2008 (Indianapolis Press Release 4 of 7) – IHT Technology
Inc. (based in San Antonio, Texas), maker of Akuma Helmets announced it
was introducing helmets with Bluetooth technology seamlessly integrated
    into the helmet.
Kerry Harris, Chairman and Founder of IHT Technology said, “IHT has
found a way to leverage our patented IPS system and Bluetooth technology
that allows riders to sync their helmets to a cell phone or MP3 player.”
The best part may be that this integrated system has three times the normal
battery life! What’s more, because we are using Bluetooth 2.0, Riders can
listen to music just before taking a call without pushing any additional
buttons. When the call is over, the system automatically returns the Rider to
    the same song.
This option will be available on all R series Akuma helmets. For 2008, it
will only be available to Distributors/Retailers placing orders at this Trade
    Show.

The Tint-On-Demand (T.O.D.) visor is the World’s first commercially
available electrochromic visor targeted toward motorcycle riders. The visor
changes from clear to tinted and back again simply with the push of a button.
Test Riders were quite impressed with how quickly the helmet changed from
clear to smoked and back again, particularly going through tunnels.
The Akuma Tint on Demand Visor will be available for retail distribution in
North America only beginning July 2008. The Akuma Sunshift Visor is
    available today.
Akuma Helmets can be found at Booth M330

I don't need an intercom and bluetooth. Can I just have the visor?

Yep. But you have to buy the helmet, as the power for the visor (and the switch on/off controls are integrated into the helmet itself. The bluetooth stuff is a plugin - but according to the article, the speakers are already built into the helmet.

I'd be keen on a visor that works in the same way as transition lenses for glasses (http://www.transitions.com/).
They wouldn't require any batteries or wires, but might be kind of expensive to manufacture.

I've had a photochromatic visor insert in my THH fullface for about 6 years now.
    No fogging at all.

I'll take a guess at what you're saying there.

I got it from the local Kawasaki dealer.
    It's a "ProGrip Light Sensitive No-Fog Lens"
I got the Iridium look one.

Yeah, now even riders can take calls on their cell. I needed more distraction while riding.

There is a whole thread talking about them somewhere if you're curious about them. Mine wasn't very impressive, I'd expect the electrochromatic visor to be much more efficient and faster to adjust.

[edit]I've just read the article (ahem, should have started there) and realised that it will take "less than a minute to get dark", which still sounds slow to me. Great for day/night riding, but not very useful for tunnels
