    name suppression double standard?

Odd how this man has been identified by both name and image, yet other alleged abusers of children get to hide behind name suppression and worse even after conviction they can remain hidden. Why the double standard? He hasn't been charged in court yet but after this, how could he expect a fair trial anyway? https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/3503...MaC6k_LTwkU3Vz

There's so many direct quotes in that story from him, he must have spoken to the reporter before getting any legal advice.

Hard to know what he was thinking talking to a reporter – maybe he's in denial. Ethically I would say said reporter should have warned him before putting him on the record.

That's not complicated. The abusers get name suppression to protect the identity of the victim. The victim in this case is sadly immune from being damaged further by being identified.

There seems to be automatic name suppression for kiddy fiddlers, but not for those who bash or kill small children.

There have been plenty of cases where those suspected, and often not yet even charged, are splashed all over the media. Two that come to mind are the Kahui twins and Dickason children, where those involved were named while police were still investigating.

Possibly to protect the victims rights? Getting bashed has different consequences for the victim than being sexually assaulted.

This subject is pretty close to me. Two of my great grandchildren were (allegedly) beaten by the current partner of their mother. Mother lied to police about curcumstances. Both (alleged) offenders have automatic name suppression, legal aid and bail. Children have been moved to foster care, no-one (us, grandmother ) are allowed to know anything other than what we have read in the media. This occurred in Lower Hutt not long after the baby Ru killing so pressure should be on Police to get a conviction, not that it matters as the courts will invariably find a way to let the (alleged) offenders of with a wet bus ticket slap.
