Especially an old air head as the airhead and holden share the same level of technology and pace.

Yeah, considering it's missing it's speedo and looks like it's got a bicycle one instead, hasn't had a wof since 2008 and the rego is on hold. I think the headlight is the same as Andy Mac put on the front of his Transalp, in which case it puts out exactly half a candle power.

Would quite like another mono GS though, I suspect I will regret selling the last one. I'd do a trade with the PD for a good one at the right price.

As my new old airhead won't be here for a few weeks while the Straitsman ferry is away getting surveyed I've been doing a bit of research.
I've looked at Gser's UK site, BMWOA US site & one or two others. The old's cool page on advrider is a wealth of info & some issues ie electrical seem to recur.
Are there any other ones worth checing out. Heard about snowman(?) who seems to be a bm guru.

I'll no doubt bore the pants of yous over time with questions however to begin with here are some basic ones.

When I get the bike I will do an oil & filter change. Any old oil such as activ1 ok?
Are things such as oil filters readily accesible or do you bulk order from UK?
The $2000 o ring. Should I be paranoid about it?
Apart from a carb clean & electrical clean up should there be anything else to check?

Kokopelli could you tell more about your bike? - it looks horn!!

Your local BMW dealer should stock all maintenance parts like filters ex stock, the same filters were used in almost every model over about 8 years. BMW support their parts for decades after most manufacturers ao anything else, and I mean anything, should be available in 10 days from Munich if you want genuine.

KTM could learn a thing or 2, 6 weeks for some screws WTF?

I didn't get over to your bike this weekend but was hoping to one night this week, it turns out Javahead is less than 5 minutes drive away from me.

Ooh, ooh, what is it? I want details!

I'd definitely be aware of the $2000 o-ring when you do the oil change. It sounds daunting at first but it's common sense once you get your head around what the problem is. Have a read. http://www.largiader.com/tech/filters/canister.html Take your time to figure out exactly what's being talked about and you'll be good to go.

There's a guy on TradeMe who regularly posts up oil filters/o-rings etc. It's OEM stuff and where I've got my last couple.

You asked an oil question? Lot's of opinions of course with zealots at either extreme. My advice would be to do a minimum of reading on the subject and form an opinion that makes you happy. Chances are good that your engine will be also. I think there's a quote floating around the tubes somewhere about your engine not being able to read what's in the tin...

For what it's worth, I use Castrol GTX in my airheads. EPX for the gearbox and final drive.

Thats also what it had in when I gave you the bike. How is the bike still doing? Did you manage to change that oil pressure switch?
Cant remember if I ever told you, but when I serviced the forks I put new seals in etc. and noticed that the bushes arent looking their best anymore. BMW NZ dont stock them, so you will have to order from motorworks (cheaper anyway)

Anyone want to buy a GS PD?

One lady owner, only driven to church on sundays, never rolled, bowled or a**holed.

But seriously, I've beached it, buried it, drowned it, flipped it, dropped it over a bank, and I still can't kill the f**kin thing. I can't lie about that, you've all seen the pictures, watched me do it or pushed me out/picked it up afterwards.

These are tough, seriously tough, and surprisingly capable. They will take you where a 240kg bike has no right to be going.

Either I'll sell as is at what I think is a cheaper price where it needs a good clean, a new speedo magnet, spark plug lead and cap, a new front indicator or at least the stalk fixing on the current one and an oil change, or I'll do all the work tidy it up and stick it on trade me and let the market decide. Aslan has a magnet for me I just need to pick it up and glue it on, and the cap and lead are pretty generic so are easy to get. I may even have a spare one already

    The good bits:

    Registered till 25th October 2010
~$4000 of Ohlins and Touratech gear
    Ohlins shock with external preload
Touratech Rallye headlight and dash mount
Touratech Rallye Headlight and fly screen
    Touratech IMO-100R Rallye Computer
    Touratech Standard Control Lamp Kit
    Touratech Oil Cooler Relocation Kit
    Touratech Sump Guard
Touratech rear brake lever relocation kit
RF900 brake caliper upgrade, plus original caliper
    Braided front brake line
    Pivot pegz, plus originals
    30mm stainless handle bar risers
    Emgo bark busters
    BMW luggage
    Spare front disc
Various other spare bits i need to catalog
Half worn E-09 on the rear
Fairly new Vee Rubber knobbly on the front
Ventura L brackets, brand new never fitted, possibly the only set available in NZ.
Full set of replacement stainless push rods, push rods seals, base o rings and other bits I can't remember right now.
PD front spoiler thing that goes behind the front wheel across the motor and headers
Those crap buttery screws in the top of the carbs have been replaced with stainless allen head screws
Lighter carb springs fitted, reduces strain on long rides.

    The bad bits:
Needs already mentioned new spark plug lead and cap - Lead and cap supplied, just got to put them on
Push rod seals are leaking but all new replacement bits are included, it doesn't seem to be leaking bad, but enough to leave a damp batch on the block, they all do this anyway
Broken front right indicator stalk from the last trip up Fishers Track - New indicator ordered
Touratech Headlight was smashed and I couldn't get a replacement so the flyscreen was cut and flared out a bit and a larger light installed. It's a '20 feet' fix. You can't see it from 20 feet away.
    It's filthy
The BMW luggage was totally mis represented when I bought it. It's usable and basically sound but you can't lock it as there's no key and one of the rack clamp locks is missing. The clamp still attachs to the rack and it's never come off but I usually put a strap around the box just in case.
Scratch on the left hand side of the tank.
WOF has expired, I'm looking at getting that renewed but it will be a few weeks due to going away on holiday and things.
The right hand side EMGO bark buster mounts are damaged and taped up.

PM me if your interested in talking or want more info, the bike is in Lower Hutt and you're welcome to come check it out.

I also have a V6 VT Commodore wagon with VX Clubsport front spoiler in blue for sale if thats your thing.
