Hi, after a bit of a compulsory break, new house and baby, have finally found time to carry on the work on the old scoots. In case anyone is interested, here's how it's going.

I am no pro, so if you have any constructive advice, I am all ears.

Half way through panel and paint of the 501 right now, have upholstered the seat (poorly), but will re-do when I am a bit further down the line.

Repaired the seat base, which had little rust holes everywhere. Would be difficult to replicate this base well, so removed all the rust and fibre glassed the back of it then filled and painted the side you see. Looks great, and seems really solid, more rigid than before but not sure how long it will last if the rust I removed gets a chance to react under the resin. Local fibreglasser reckons with no air or moisture, the resin will seal everything. We'll see.

There was a bit of welding and a bit of body filler to apply, due to previous damage to the old girl, and the pretty strong but ugly welding that had gone on long before I laid eye's on it. Filling a curved body and covering old injuries is a difficult skill and one I lack the most, so it's been a slow painful process at times, have made good progress so should be happy... but I havn't finished yet...

Have my own compressor and spraying equipment, but am still in the experimental stage trying settings, pressures and things, to get a good finish. Bit of an art, and time consuming to get right, which I am no where near yet... but learning all along the way. I am determined to give it my best shot, and I know what I do may not be perfect, but so long as I am happy at the end (am pretty fussy), I will not take it to a pro to spray it. See how it goes.

The blue on the tank is the colour the old girl will be, with a few parts white.

Bit further along now. Painting is just about finished, and reassembly has begun. A few more parts have been made. Didn't take like a duck to water with the painting. Some buffing to do yet, so still working on it.

The rubber block for the rear suspension was made by a bloody clever bloke on the edge of Palmerston North, chroming and zinc plating done, tires and wheels assembled etc...

Have been riding the nearly finished resto round the block. Goes well, need's minor tuning, no rattles surprisingly. Had it at 45 miles per hour, but it will go faster. Fun to ride, super comfortable sitting bolt upright. The drum brakes work well with new brake linings, not bedded in yet, so I guess will get a bit better perhaps.

I have to fit the front bumper and some rubber trims... Also need the lock for the lectric panel door, and new foot board rubbers. Check the pics.

As I recall they were capable of motorway speeds (1970) - so should be good at 55 mph, at least - maybe more? Good work on the rebuild.
Now, for one with a 360 Jawa motor.....?

Finally found the time and got the old girl completed. Getting the last bits, rubber trims and what seem to relatively minor, can take a while. Its not perfectly original... but quite close, just couldn't get my hands on the tell tale light/hook part that goes on the dash.

Quite gratifying finishing a long restoration, definitely doing it all over again with the 502 now. I can hear the wife moaning in the background :-)
