The Mayan calender predicts the end of an era not the end of the world. They have various calendar counts. One of these is the Long Count, which is a continuous count in days since August 9th, 3114 BCE. The Long Count will reset to zero-zero-zero-zero-zero on December 21, 2012. But this is just a major calendar change – their equivalent of Y2K –

The galactic alighnment occurs once every 26,000 years

No big deal.

I really am a believer in having a wide knowledge base, but I must admit I am impressed. Where on earth did you come up with that from? One would need to go quite far out of their way to uncover such truths.

Yes, if it was just an immediate change of polarity it wouldn't be too bad.

However, it is expected that the change will take place over somewhere between a decade and a century and that in the meantime the magnetic field will be severely weakened. As a result there will be an increase in the amount of radiation incident upon the earth and consequently all sorts of bad shit is going to happen.
And it would be even worse if the change didn't take place and the magnetic field just vanished - we don't know a lot about how the core of the earth works, but that doomsday scenario could be a possibility. As a result solarwinds would have free reign to strip the atmosphere from our planet. Some people think that's what happened to Mars...

There's also a hypothesis that we are in the transitionary state already and that weakening of the magnetic field in the southern hemisphere is what has been causing the depletion of the ozone layer.

Hell if I know - but according to geological data we should be overdue for the next change. Anyway, I'm not worried.
