AMI's name and ownership structure appear to have been created to hide who actually owns the company. The primary company is owned by a holding company which in turn is owned by a trust (which doesn't declare who the actual owners are).

AMI was originally incorporated on 2nd of October 1978. It changes its original name of SIMU SUPERANNUATION NOMINEES LIMITED on the 19th of may 1992, and then again changed its name to NZAA INSURANCE LIMITED on the 24th of September 1996.

The holding company, AMI INSURANCE HOLDINGS LIMITED, also has an unusual history. It changed its name of JIMJAM HOLDINGS LIMITED on the 19th of May 1992, and then again to AANZ INSURANCE LIMITED on the 23rd of January 1997.
