Bus Lanes

Overview
Bus lanes are defined by the Land Transport (Road User) Rule 2004 (SR 2004/427), section 1.6.
bus lane means a lane reserved by a marking or sign installed at the start of the lane and at each point at which the lane resumes
after an intersection for the use of—
(a) buses; and
(b) cycles, mopeds, and motorcycles (unless 1 or more are specifically excluded by the sign)
Motorway Bus Lanes
Transit NZ have stated[1] that the "bus lanes" on motorways are governed by Transit Bylaw 2002/19 which is reported as saying only "timetabled passenger service vehicles" may use the lanes. No reference can be found to this bylaw to verify this. However Section 14 of the Bylaws Act 1910 says that if a bylaw is "repugnant" to a provision of legislation, then the legislation takes precedence. Some interpret repugnant to mean contradictory.
