International Driving Permit

If you are visiting New Zealand, are over 18 years of age, and hold a full licence in your country of origin, then you may be eligible to apply for an International Driving Permit[1] (IDP for short). If you are already in New Zealand then the only place you can get an IDP from is the Automobile Association (AA for short).

An IDP is only valid for 12 months, and can not be used for commercial purposes. You can not use an IDP for work or in a work environment.

An IDP in New Zealand costs around $20.

Note that if you become an AA member then they have a break down assistance program. They don't employ motorcycle mechanics directly, but sometimes you get lucky. As a result, many motorcyclists sign up to their AA+ membership, which means if you break down somewhere they'll transport you and your bike back "home" (obviously only within NZ). There are some special conditions in the fine print, so read it so you have a clear idea of what you are covered for. The AA have a good reputation within New Zealand.

If you are going to be residing in New Zealand for more than 12 months you should consider getting an overseas driver licence conversion.
