New Zealand Roads

The majority of roads in New Zealand are chipsealed with hot mix asphalt (also simply known as "tar seal")[1]. Roading around areas of population tends to be of good quality, but you do notice the quality of road maintenance drops as you move further away from areas of population.

Apart from tar seal you may run into what New Zealander's called "metal" roads[2]. These are not constructed from metal. They are loose gravel. You can only typically find metal roads in rural areas.

In New Zealand we drive on the left hand side of the road. The Land Transport Safety Authority (known as the LTSA) set all the regulations regarding the use of roads in New Zealand.

Typically within a city environment the speed limit is 50 km/h, and increases through a range of speeds to the open road speed limit of 100 km/h.
