Hi Folks
New here, but thought i'd get your advice!

I've got an old ish shoei helmet - but the outer plastic layer is cracking, and has peeled off in places. I was wondering what peoples advice is. Of course, new helmet is always the best, and i'll be doing that as soon as I can, but until then, are there any things I can do to stop further peeling - eg, is sticking ductape over it ok? or electrical insulation tape or a paint or laquor?

Cheers

Jon

With you there man, can't be too careful with your noggin - a crack turns a helmet into an ornament.

You can pick up a cheapish/safe helmet for less than a couple of hundred.

I'd be walking/caging!

sure - i'll just get a new one. I don't actaully have a bike at the moment, so don't worry, i'm not riding around using this helmet! I just thought i'd see what peoples comments were. I knew the shop answer would be 'buy our $500 helment', but it's good to get 'indepent feedback!'

Yeah man, well i picked up an LLC helmet for the missus a few months ago, it was $200 and good and i have seen some Shark helmets for $250 that are good too. Obviously there's benefits for getting the top-range stuff but to get you on the road start with being protected.

I would be dubious of brands that are only available on trademe, had an "Aris" (say it fast, it sounds like arse) it cost me $120 and although it was probably quite safe, it was uncomfortable and the shape obscured my vision allot.

Do youself a favour and dont bother even attempting to fix that helmet as it definately wont protect you at all if you were ever involved in an accident. Buy yourself a new helmet as your life is worth it. Regardless of the condition of your helmet, you should replace a helmet every 5 yrs.

Most shops will be more than happy to sell you a lower priced helmet. Don't assume they are out to rip you off. Go and see Martin out at Motomart, tell him your budget, he'll be more than happy to fix you up with the lid best suited to you.

The independent feedback will probably include "how much do you value your brain" .... you can get an ok helmet for as little as $200 - it depends on too many variables - head shape as a starter.

There are lots of 'only used a few times' helmets on Trademe for less tha $100.

Do yourself a favour and break the helmet you have in half to prevent anyone else attempting to use it.

Good to test the water on this too. Cut the straps off the thing so it can not be used, it is not safe. For a bit of fun, see if you can actually smash it to bits. Back of axes may make an impression  Film it for us as a bit of a product review. But please cut the straps off it now.

Sharp side of the axe is much more fun!:D It took 4 descent whacks to crush my Arai, but I still couldn't get the axe to penetrate the shell.
