there's heaps of online shops so look around and make your mind up. If it's just for trail riding and you don't wanna spend then you'll find something for $150. there was some "Airoh" helmets for $150 on special at motoworks.co.nz a couple months back and all the MX1 boys seem to be wearing Airoh. Be sure you know what your size is before buying over the net. This makes a major difference to your safety

You don't say where you are ... but I like Cycletreads on Barry's Point Road in Takapuna, Auckland.

I would check any helmet you get against the UK safety rating program.

Try and get something with 4 stars or better (you only get one head after all).

Helmets are a throwaway item and therefore I get my Shark race skid-lids for about $300. The trouble with expensive helmets is that people tend to hold onto them far longer than they should. A cheap new helmet is far safer than a 4 year old expensive helmet.

Another vote for the Airoh Runners at $150.

Made in Italy, not China.
If you are in chch, you can try them on in their shop.

any recommendations?

Just one

You have overlooked the single most important factor

Good fit

Hey thanks for the recommendations, quite like the look of those Airoh helmets, thought they may be shite Chinese ones at first but made in Italy can't be bad and for $150. At that price you can afford to throw them away even if you drop it on the floor!. But will all come down to fit I guess.

Here is a couple I found on TardMe.

The first was Cody Cooper's - $100

The second is a Dough Henry Special Edition I saw on TradeMe advertised by Cash Converters - $200 in mint condition

only thing that can clip off are the cheek cushions, the rest of the lining looks to be set in behind the plasticbeady thing that goes around the lip. don't wanna start pulling that off if it's not meant to come out?

i would not reccomened buying a second hand helmet at all, helmets are designed to take one big hit and thats it,

also you should try the brand of helmet you are buying on before you commit to one, between brands they vary alot, a ill fitting helmet can be dangerous as well,

What Scott said, you don't know if a 2nd hand one has been in a crash.

After reading an article.. http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/gearbox/motorcycle_helmet_review/index.html
I won't buy a Snell standards helmet as they can transfer too much force.
ECE or Dot only standards ftw

Mine is a cheap one and it has no removable liner so stinks. Its my stink so I don't really mind, but still. I guess its like how your own farts don't smell to bad. Barty's one was cool for a cheaper one.

I wonder if you can spray dynamo on it and then wipe the splooge off? From what I hear dynamo can lift off axle grease so should have no problem with my hair product!
