Ahead of this (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=100117)

Where do you think the City needs more parking?
Current list & map of places is here (http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/auckland/transport/parking/motorcycle.asp)

Specific spots would be good, like the corner of x & y, or next to b on c road. Also looking for where bikes are being parked on footpaths in groups :)

Ponsonby Rd. All the way along. Jervois Rd, at the 3 lamps end. Newmarket is real bad, they took away most of what there was. Quite a few bikes park (used to anyway) on the footpath outside that 247 or whatever number it is place. Parnell, especially at the upper end of the strip. Down the bottom of Queen St, the lower bit, too far from Britomart in one direction and too far from Aotea in the other. Lower Hobson St. They deliberately bollocked up the parking area on private property opposite the old Farmers building. Down around Victoria market needs some. Newmarket is the worst. It's really bad. Needs at least another 50 places. Along the far end of K road/Gt north rd (is it Gt Nth or New Nth). Along by the end of Ponsonby Rd.

Skycity parking needs a bit clarification on where motorbikes can park.

Mission Bay, in front of "Mission Bay Cafe" (formerly Mecca) park in front of the disabled one would work well...

Never had a problem parking in the city.

The car park guys tell you that so long as you don't take a space or block anyone in, then its free.

A few more in front of the central library would be great. Since the changes on Symonds Street, the library parking has been chaotic and some people have no idea on parking etiquette  - I like my wing mirrors where they were thanks. No need to adjust them for me.

Just make it legal to park on footpaths as long as it isn't obstructing anyone and be done with it.

Would that be for bikes only or for all vehicles?

Anything that wouldn't damage the footpath or grass etc.

Turn one pay and display carpark in every street in cbd to motorcycle parking. Each should be able to take 3-5 motorcycles. Could encourage more people to get into biking for commuting, decreasing congestion and overall increasing the chances of cars getting parks.

But what's in it for the council? Easy answer - when the bike park is empty cars will use it, so the ACC will get to issue an infringement notice and earn more revenue in fines! It's a win-win situation!

Hey guys,

I recently got a new job in town, which means i will need to comute to the city everyday.

So i thought this was a great time to get a road bike.

How ever there is just one thing i cant get my head around, how do you guys display your parking ticket?

Do you even pay for parking?

Any tips and tricks would be great!

Cheers.

No need to buy or display parking ticket. Few things in life are free but bike parking is one of them *touch wood*

Oh wow really, what a bonus!

I read somewhere that as long as you can get past the arm barrier you can park in car parks for free? Is this true?

This is not likely to be free for much longer. I see AKCC are looking at new technology to enable m/bikes to use pay parking. New parking meters where you enter your regno in before paying.

Also the Wellington parking building operators are slowly removing free motorbike spaces from their buildings.

More or less correct, as long as you don't take up any parks, AKA park in an out of the way corner, or a non-specified park. Some (not all) parking buildings have designated bike parks, but that's a bit of a rarity.
Whereabouts in town are you working?

Thanks Maggot for clearing that up.

I will be based on Vincent street, know of any sneaky parks around there?

There are a few places in town that are free designated parking spaces for bikes:

Tournament parking does not however do free parking for bikes and expects you to pay the full amount (even though we don't take up the full space pisses me off) btw

Depending on what end of Vincent street you are working at, there are some sneaky motorbike parks behind the old Auckalnd Regional Council building (use to be the Vodafone building). Free parking, heaps of spaces, a few undercover if you get there early and monitored by camera (tracking theives). The Civic will also be a good option, just park next to other bikes (thats what i did the other week as it was my first time in there). Probably a few more sneaky parks on Vincent St, like out the front of the central police station :Police:  There are also a few in the YMCA car park too

The problem with them is that (other than the one by the Central public library) there is no things to chain your bike to (cue van-equipped bike thief) and that most of them are so small they're always full.

Any ideas?

Thank the Wellingtonians who elected a greenie to mayoral role and gave the parking businesses an idea.

It's sad when the society ends up seeing another person as just another cash cow.

This could be superceded soon, Palmerston North (the world leader that we are) are trialling a new remote monitoring system, which if successful will likely be taken on by other cities. Basically there is a little disc in each park which senses when a vehicle is above it cos it blocks the light. So the wardens know exactly which spaces are in use but not paid for, unless of course a smaller vehicle was using one but not covering the sensor :shifty: But it sounds like they half-assed the payment system interface and the project might go belly-up because of it.

I wouldn't trust it. Car parks are provided to make money and the barriers force vehicles to pay to exit. Some car park owners may well allow motorbikes to use the odd shaped space at no charge, but you'd need to check it out first. You'd probably get away with it in an unmanned car park, but you'd get a funny look from the bloke in the box when you try and squeeze between him and the barrier when he expects his 50c. Or $25 seeing as you are in Auckland.

Oh man if it works on light you could have some fun with mirrors.

Plus what happens if someone just walks over it?

they have a similar system (but maybe for a different reason) in the civic carpark. There is a light above or something (was about a month ago that I noticed it) that is either red or green depending on if the park is taken or no. If you walk through a park that does not have a car in it, you can cause it to change colour. I don't know how this compares to the system in Palmy though or what effect it would have on their money grubbing

There is a 5 min period where you don't have to pay for the park if you're just nipping into a shop. so unless you want to stand in a park for 5 min, I don't think there will be an issue!

I think they do this to keep count of occupied vs vacant car parks so you don't waste your time driving around for 10mins inside the carpark and then have to paid $5 to get out to go somewhere else.

But could they not keep track due to the number of tickets that have not been collected by the machine at the exit? Cause that would work even with the prepay system that they have on weekends and for early birds

They use these in Queenstown. If it senses that a car has been parked over the top of it for more than the time allowed for that space it notifies the warden who can put down his donuts and go and issue a ticket.

There are signs aound the CBD telling you how many parks are vacant and how many are empty. I bet they do collect time information so they can beef up the $/hr fees as they will then know that parking is in high demand for a particular area.

While we're on the subject of parking, what's the story about parking a bike at Auckland airport, specificly the domestic terminal? I'm flying down to Queenstown for a few days in November and it's cheaper to ride to Auck's and then fly. Bike only parks? ride under barrier?

I've been abused by a couple of ticket people for having taken a ticket, rather than jusst riding around barriers. If I'm intending on parking for a day or so (and paying), I use the whole park, and I take the ticket with me.

Civic used to (might be a year or two back now) have a designated bike park area (roof was being fixed), but you didn't take a ticket to park there (one of the places who abused me for trying to be honest and do things right lol).

Don't go into town often (couple of times a year at most, but usually once every two years or so), so only passing on what might be history.

Because the ticket guy has to reconcile the tickets at the end of each day, and if someone takes a ticket and not cash it in (like some bikes would) the system might throw an error and leaves the poor guy scratching his head delaying his trip home.

Civic still has free bike parking area, but on 2nd level, and on the other side (close to the Mayoral Drive stairwell) instead. Bless Auckland City Council (God rest her soul), and hopefully Auckland Council wouldn't mind continuing the tradition. And it now has a proper warning on the machine "Motorcycle do not take ticket".
