Built in the 1920's by Robert Bourke its a twin cylinder 1stroke .. it fires every stroke the guys on on thumper were looking at it for possible dirt bike applications

would i be correct in sayins its just a two cylinder 2 stroke but in a boxer configuration with a funny crank. Cant see many benifits over a inline twin two stroke, balance would be better, but takes up heaps of space, so probly not for bikes. Viffermans link has a super and turbo charged one, now this is an idea i like, pity it can only do deisel.
What i want to see in a bike is a supercharged direct injection petrol engine. KTM were working on a direct injection two stroke at some point but it must have stopped, pity.

If you mount it north\south you might need to add the clutch and the gear box to the side of it making it stick out further on one side. Would make it rather imbalanced ? Suppose you can mount the fuel tank to the other side to try and counter balance it lol :0

I've seen some of the new BMW cross road bikes with a funny setup. Trying to find something out about them now, (I have seen some on the motorway and the engine sticks out side of the frame on both sides.... looked very ugly! But thats not to say it is because they have this type of design, it might be some other reason why the engine over hangs both sides.... )

Ahh i see way cool.... man they stick out a far bit though aye when you see them in a frame... keep thinking when im on the motorway and they go down the white line if a car was a bit to close and they hit it .... be like game over.... normally the only thing that over hangs is the mirror... hit that and just keep rolling through traffic :)

that army one is even cleverer. It's almost like 4 pistons in 2 cylinders thus doubling stroke for each bore therefore more cc's... more power. It's not really like a subie or beemer boxer as they're 4 stroke but as bogan said i can't see the advantage over a twin 2 stroke except for the opposing piston idea... that's cool

i wud say its fairly different if you are mounting east west (conventional inline direction) as the crank is in the middle, rather than at one end like usual, so no matter where you put the gearbox, you will have bits hanging down below the crankshaft, meaning you will have to mount the whole thing higher, poor cog location etc etc. North-South, id be the same as a bmw boxer engine, but probly cud be a wee bit narrower as it does not need valves/cams etc.

I was riding my bike down the beach in otaki a few years ago and popped up to the dairy to get a can of fizzy pop and this big fat old cunt with a beard like santa and a gunt (half gut half cunt) that hung waaay over his stubbies came up to me and started asking me where he could get a single cylinder alloy motor for cheap (like the one on my bike).
He reconed he was gonna make hydrogen from water and then started blabing on about how he had made lasers that could set houses on fire and the govt had taken them off him etc etc.
He was a bit mental but a bloody genius. just goes to show you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover 'cos he really did look like shit but i recon some of his inventions may have rivalled sammi's doubleA torch

Ok, I think most of you guys kind of missed the points of difference in the Bourke Engine Design...
A big part of the concept is the scotch yoke used to tansfre the upsie downsie of the pistons to the roundie roundie need ed to spin wheels.
They show promise but as yet no-one has made one that works very efficiently in practice. (or if they have they are not telling)
A simple google search will reaveal plenty to anyone remotely interested.

Since we're on the subject of different engine designs and "inventions" here's the status of my current kickarse project.
My grunter PWM injected, optically timed, stainless steel ball bearing balanced short strokers. yeehaarr:Punk:
My biggest challenge now, engineering wise, will be to lower the centre of gravity if I want to whack a bike cradle ontop/around this.
The oposed piston/cylinder deisel engine looks fuckin briliant. The thing wouldn't vibrate at all, has insane power figures. The only down side I can see, (for a car application), is the rate that the compression ramps up, it would eat starter motors for breakfast. Perhaps a hydrolic starter to sort that out.
Its like a Rotary engine but with piston's mounted on the sides.... look's stupid!
Has the same motion in the crank as the Rotary.
Ummmm, the "crank" motion of a rotory, is the same as a conventional engine, it goes round and round, in a nearly perfect circle, compared to what it's housed in (only not perfect because of engineering tollerences). The thing that is different is how the rotor is driven from it. And still it doesn't resemble the o.p.o.c motor.

Take into account it was being built and used in trucks 52 years ago,
90 BHP is not bad for a 3000cc desiel when Ford and Chev were only getting 110BHP out of there V* truck motors,
The 3 cylinder Commer was a very common truck here in NZ,
Im sure there are a few here that remember tbe Bull Nosed Commers, almost the first common cab over engine truck.

yes more rpm = more hp but when you look at diesel they rev low my dad old boat had 400hp twin v8 diesel maxed out at 3700rpm but put out 700-750 pds of torque each pushed 11tons of power cat to 32-34 knots although it did drink around $50 an hour and that was 4 years ago when diesel wa cheap hence the 3000 liter tanks. try filling that suxer
