View Full Version : Wellington - Help a Motorcyclist. Donate Blood.

Ms Piggy
28th May 2009, 18:53
Some of you might know Glen Magson, some of you don't.

Glen is a Motorcyclists Motorcyclist & all round nice guy.
He is also fighting a huge battle with cancer.
If you know the reality of this, I don't have to explain.
If not, then imagine being really really sick for an awfully long time and
then double it.

Glen has friends to support him & he has money, what he needs is blood --- lots of it.

If you are able to donate blood (preferably yours) please contact Lynnda Barry lynnda.barry@southerncross.co.nz
We are planning to try and make a mass donation on Monday 15th June. Lynnda has written the words below which explain more about time, place & eligibility.

As we've been told that his next round of Chemo: his last we hope: is going to be pretty nasty: we found a specialist that was willing to tell us what to expect, so that we can be prepared.

Glen is going to need a lot of blood : and as Wellington's stocks are pretty low already we want to make sure there is enough there or when he needs it as he'll be requiring blood transfusions from the 15th onwards, so our timing should be prefect.

The next blood run for Glen will take place on the 8th of June, this is pretty close to world blood donor day, so I hope this date will bring a few more of you out of the woods: those of you who can donate blood on this Monday Afternoon - or evening, please contact me & I will reserve you a space.

Help me out by telling me:
If you have a preferred time
If you have donated before

The criteria to donate are: You must feel healthy: You must be 50 kg or over. Face it most of you are well over 50kg!

Health:
You must be in good health. So try and not get too hammered on the day before
You cannot donate if you have a cold, flu, sore throat, cold sore, stomach bug or any other infection. So stay away from sick people.
If you have recently had a tattoo or body piercing you cannot donate for 6 months from the date of the procedure.
If you have visited the dentist for a minor procedure you must wait 24 hours before donating; for major work wait a month.

Travel:
You must not have lived in the United Kingdom, France or the Republic of Ireland between 1980 and 1996 for a cumulative 6 months or more.

Food:
You must have eaten some food during the four hours prior to donation.

Identification:
You must bring appropriate identification with you each time you donate.
Acceptable ID is a document or a combination of documents, which contains three (3) unique points of personal information. These can be: full name, photograph, date of birth, home address, signature, donor ID/registration number, workplace (work ID cards only) or school (school ID cards only). A Drivers Licence is fine if you haven't donated before.

How to get there.......

Damn good cause and glad you are making people aware Cathy!!

I'd love to but I'm not allowed to, but I'll mention it to others I know who can.

Yep, Glen is a mate of mine and the Wellington Blood Service is very short of 'O' blood at the moment.

I think Loopy (Lynnda) has had to shift to the 15th June for the mass donation. I'm donating on the 15th at 4:30pm. You WILL have to book. Contact Lynnda as per Ms Piggy's post.

Glen is a great guy; he has both 'B' and 'T' cell cancers - I told it's quite rare. I've never known a guy who is so talented with his knowledge and riding and so helpful as well.

CDMTCI organised a blood run for Glen a month or so back and I think another is in the pipeline. Happy to donate, especially under the circumstances and hope the next round of chemo does its job.

Due to having haemochromatosis (body stores iron to potentially fatal levels) I need to have blood taken off to stay healthy. I was donating every two months for a while last year, but my ferritin levels have dropped now so they have cut it back to every four months. I gave blood last month, so they won't let me back until August.

They like my blood as it's B- - only 2% of the population have that blood group so they're happy to take as much as they can get. But O is very much wanted too, as it can be used by many more people.

Got a phone call from the blood service yesterday and made an appointment for next week.

Good to see them actively calling previous donors. Been pretty slack about it, but someone on the phone made it really easy to book a time right then.

I can't give plasma as with my condition they need to take the whole blood for it to be of any benefit to me - plus you have to have good veins and I certainly don't have those! Mine are very fine and very deep, so it's not usually a pleasant experience for me at the best of times.

I'm just glad they can use my blood as I'd hate the thought of it going to waste - if they have to take it from me, it may as well be used. My ferritin levels are fine - but if you have levels over 500 they can't use your blood until the levels drop. A friend started on close to 900 and had to have blood removed every two weeks (about 200ml at a time) until his levels dropped.

For those that can please do so. If it wasn't for donors I would be one of the many that probably would not be here today.
