Hey!

Just thought I'd try posting here to see if there are any people in the Tauranga area that have been a pillion before.

I've been riding for over a year now (10+ months on a Virago 250, now it's a Shadow VT750) and have never had a pillion on the back but really want to learn.

So I'm just wondering if there are any people in the Tauranga area that would be keen to go on the back of my bike to help with this learning curve!

I've asked a couple people around work and there were no takers really (my riding isn't that dangerous!)

Cheers,
Tyron

You know, they're actually quite hard to find!

I've actually got this mouse trap setup in the garage to help out with that, but haven't had any real luck so far :).

Make sure your volunteer has been pillion before or at least ridden a bike ....
last thing you want is someone trying to resist a lean over on the bike.....

or someone trying to lean the bike for you. susan was easily the worst pillion ive had. im quite capable of leaning without any help, and slowing for a set of lights is NOT the best time readjust your seating position. :shit:

Suggestion: Get some training before you take a pillion, or at least a briefing from an experienced rider on what to expect, because some things change. Even just loading your pillion on the the bike can be a fright if you don't know what to expect. And you really need to be ready for some other things, such as the pillion shifting their weight mid-corner, or even just wiggling to get comfy - the bike weaves around quite a lot and you need to expect it and counteract it.

I really enjoy taking passengers. Especially girls.

I refuse to take pillions. The girls can walk, I dont wanna ruin my bike cuz she decided to shift in the seat mid corner.

It's all completely workable, but you just have to back off from using all of your ability (so you have some up your sleeve) and brief your passenger properly, and know what to do when they wriggle, and have the brain-lock in check so you can act.

I was only kidding. I try to pull girls on my bike. But they just point and laugh.

Worst thing I had was a wiggling pillion. Next time my sister can walk to town.

my training was: my light as all hell co worker around the forecourt at work right before closing. i dunno how much he weighed, but it cant have been over 50kg. i honestly "forgot" he was there. perfect pillion... sat like a sack of spuds and just went with the bike. pity he was a right cunt the rest of the time.
was a huge difference when i pillioned susan, as there was at least an 80kg weight increase. much harder to control the bike. so i suggest picking someone lightweight... much easier for learning.

Should have told her she might get a Man if she wears a helmet.

Bikers are badasses and dont care about peoples feelings.

just get some one on the back already, i was taking my girlfriend as pillion on my learnersYup. It's not hard.

Keep your feet firmly planted and hands on the bars when loading and unloading. Always load from the left. Move your weight to your right-side foot and gesture to them to stand on the footpeg and swing a leg over. Be ready for the weight to move to your left foot, and then your right foot again. Don't load on slippery surfaces, ie gravel.

Explain that you are just learning to pillion people, so help me out a bit.

Ask them to sit really really still while you are doing slow speed roundabouts and corners and stuff, as it's, um, complex.

Invite them to wriggle a bit and get comfy on straight pieces of road. The bike will weave about about, somewhat like strong wind, and just a little bar pressure is all thats needed to regulate it.

Please sit still in corners, and look past my helmet around the inside of the corner. Don't lean out, just move your helmet so you can see the road ahead, but on the inside of the corner, not the outside.. or else stare at the back of my head.. (not very interesting!)

Slow down so you are well inside your comfort zone. That way you have plenty in reserve if they decide to pull out their puck in the middle of a corner, or do up their shoelaces or something.

Remember, you are both learning, so be patient with each other.

Just tell the pillion to act like a backpack. Where ever you go they go. And thats all. You will get used to it pretty quickly. My wife does that and she loves the bike. Mind you she falls asleep on the way to auckland as a pillion.
