View Full Version : What lanes do you use?

I left the Airport Oaks area today (Friday) at around 5:15pm to head home to Onehunga. I got on to the South Western motorway and up to Onehunga headed down the drive to the garage (the car has to sit out in the cold). It took less than 15 minutes. If I had used only the Lane 1, Lane 2 & Lane 3 it would have taken more like 45 minutes, maybe more. Thankfully I was on my scooter, not driving my car and I was able to utilise the special 'bike only' lanes. To get onto the South Western I used Lane F to get past the big long queue of cars in Lane 1 (I was turning left from the left turning lanes, but had to get past all the cars going straight to get to the left turning lane). Then to travel along the South Western I used Lane 1a most of the way. The great thing with motorbikes & motor scooters is that they can use the normal lanes whenever it suits, but also have access to the special lanes.
So - what lanes do you guys use when riding?
For those not familiar with the special bike lanes:
Lane 1a is the ancillary lane between Lane 1 & Lane 2. Lane 2a is between Lane 2 & Lane 3, etc.
Lane F is that one that often has pedestrians walking on it.

Yeah, me too. Lane F was empty when I used it as was Lane 1a and Lane 2a. That's how I got home much quicker than if I had been using the crowded lanes that the cars/vans/trucks/buses were using.

Use them all, all the time.
Lanes are for using.
Indicate, change lane, indicate, change back. There we go...........
Now, when you're facing the front, with your arms folded, we'll tell you how to blow up your engine. Isn't that exciting? Brmm brmm, went the engine and we all fell off our chairs together.

I stick to lane 1 and 2 most of the time. Use lane 1a a lot of the time. Lane C(entre) can be handy as well. Try to keep the bike out of lane G(uttter) which is strange as that is normally where my mind is.

If by lane do you mean a place on the road that a motorcycle can fit in?
If you do, then thats where I ride. If I can fit through, that's my lane.

It's a bit different in the South Island.
We usually use the left lane. Apparently the right lane is reserved for the occasional on-coming vehicle.

Yep, that's what I am talking about.
I just got home from a drive in the car (poor thing needed a run, now it has done almost 570kms in the last 9 months, the scooter has done almost 20,000kms). It is much harder travelling in Auckland when you have to stick to the regular car lanes.

I have found it unnecessary to use a footpath. For the moment.

i tend to use the left lane if I am going to to exit at the "halfway point" anfd the right hand lane if existing after that.i always try to either be behind or in front of the vehicle on my left in the latter scenario.I dont take too much notice of what people indicate, because sometimes they do the opposite of what the indicator suggests. For you folk who lane split at roundabouts, i hope the traffic is stopped.
Its Kyrgyzstan...left lane, right lane, middle lane, any lane you like and failing that, make your own lane straddling any line on anyside of any line of the road....

Yep, that's the one.
Just get there quickly and safely.
Which ever lane(s) you use, make sure you own it and not let car drivers steal your space.
