At 12 last night, I decided that since it was such a cold and clear night that it would be a good idea to go do some photography and just generally get out and about.
All was going brilliantly, stopped in town, got (what I hope to be) some nice shots, then thought...hey, its only 1am why not take a drive out into some Hunua back roads and get a few of the night sky.
So I did, hopped onto the southern, got off at Papakura and proceeded to go out into Hunua, took a few back roads etc and eventually got to a spot where there was no light pollution from the city because I was in the middle on nowhere. GREAT.
Hop out of the car to have a quick looksy at the sky, sure enough, amazing, could see more stars than on the average night thanks to the cold and clear atmosphere.
Walk around to side of car to get out camera and tripod...and yep. Locked out with keys in ignition.
'OK' I think, I can suss this, pull out cellphone (for light) and try find a long length of wire or such from one of the farmers fences. 1 minute later, cell phone dies. EVEN BETTER.
So now I know I am buggered. I can break into a car with a piece of wire, but I have no light to find some. I have no cellphone to call anyone and no one is remotely close to me that I can go to for help. Even if I could, there is no way in hell I am just leaving my car sitting there with keys in it and camera sitting in plain view.
So I do what I have to do....elbow through the passengers window.
Was an amazingly cold drive home. Now I have glass to clean up and a new window to source. FANTASTIC.
I am a moron.

Don't worry buddy, better than sleeping next to it!
Small price to get home. I'm sure that's what I'd do. Fuck leaving it alone, fuck sleeping in the cold.
Hope you had a nice warm shower when you got home.

Old skool lesson: ALWAYS use the key to lock the car - that way you know there's a fair chance it will unlock it -plus if it's in your hand it's not in the ignition.:msn-wink:
Warning: This may not always be applicable to modern cars - if you own such a vehicle then bad luck.
Oh, and a well-hidden spare key is always a bonus....

Smash the windscreen next time. Then you can claim the insurance.

Smash the rear triangle window if you can. Windscreen makes for an even colder drive home

If we didn't do things like this, we'd never have any Minties moments then innit? :msn-wink:
I'm sure there will be some apocryphal stories out there about bikies leaving keys in their ignitions and swearing to blue buggery blazes how they lost their key ... then go out and

Some cars (like mine) actually won't lock without the key, which is a very handy feature. Means I have never (touch wood) locked my keys in the car.
Bad luck Brett - is your elbow sore too? :pinch:

best place to hide the spare key. In your handbag. or for guys keep a spare in your wallet.
Don't forget a booster unit for when your battery is dead.

Yeah, lesson learnt. Unfortuanately, I am a shocker with keys> I once owned a little daihatsu while I was studying and I locked the keys in it at least once a fortnight. I got to the stage where I hid a piece of wire under the car and could break in in less than 10 secs...not really showing my IQ to be too impressive is it....

Indeed I was!

Yeah LOL...only it would have been a MISERABLE drive home!
Smash the rear triangle window if you can. Windscreen makes for an even colder drive home
Mate, I TRIED!!!! I picked up a big rock and basked that little window for a few mins. All that was happening was that showers of sparks were going everywhere and the rock was breaking, and it was good old Basalt, not some shit sand stone either!
If there is no pictures this thread is useless. And there is no excuse! You had the camera!!
DOH - Will Have to add then...
Thats why you ride a bike Brett... :bleh:

LOL...yeah the reason I didnt take the bike was that it was so cold I thought for once I would chicken out. Wish I HAD taken it now.

Nah the elbow is all good, I am surprised how easily the window broke.

I remember some police program ages go where they put Subarus as such in Auckland strets waiting for car thieves to break into them and arrest them. They had this ex-car thief showing how easy it is to break a car windows without making a sound. Used some sort of tradesman tool to shatter the glass by only touching it.
got a story you want to share...? :buggerd:
Ah gods this aint nothing to do with the fact Allan rides a Honda does it?

Some of us will take the piss but most of us have many similar stories.
FWIW - You made the right decision.
I did see someone get into his car by removing the window rubber (and window) with a small screwdriver and then refit it afterwards with a thin piece of wire.
I wonder what his other job is!

This is no guarantee that you can't lock yourself out.
Consider this scene: Arrive at the airport, take key from the ignition and lock car door.Open boot, remove luggage.Swing boot lid down and just as the last gap closes, spot the car keys you dropped on the boot floor so you could use both hands to lift the luggage.Boot lid slams shut.:shit::doh:
