View Full Version : Getting first bike soon

This Friday I'll be pillioning up to Kerikeri with motorbyclist to pick up a Suzuki FXR 150, unless there is something blatantly wrong with it.
I have my learners and everything, and can't wait to ride the FXR back.
I've had my scooter since February-ish and it's now a little bit beat up. XD After a bit of cleaning and fixing I'll be selling it on trademe.
Hoping for reasonable weather this friday!

A choice you won't regret - what colour is it? Blue, silver or green? We can be team SMC FXR
(Except the days I'm on a Honda-thing because I suddenly have magically have money to run one )
Andrew can show you how to abuse one properly too...

It's one of the blue ones with the big yellow checkered pattern on the tank. :]
Olololol! You'll have no trouble hiding, Rob; people seem to love parking you in!

You need to give us more accurate time sand locations.
So we can all escort you to your bike pickup and ride out.
Are you picking it up from a dealership or private?
if its private seller i am sure 30 odd bikes turning up would get him to lower the price slightly. :Punk:

I've heard of that happening. XD A group of bikers turning up to check out a bike is akin to a flock of vultures descending upon some poor soul stranded in a desert in the middle of nowhere.
Ya it's a private seller. Shit, speaking of which I should probably get his actual address off him. Somehow I think "Kerikeri" isn't specific enough ha

would you care for an extra couple of riders to come along.
Then your first ride on the bike can be a proper actual ride out doing stuff with kb'rs

Are you riding it back from Kerikeri? To Auckland?
Let me warn you, the seat on the FXR gets pretty uncomfortable on a long trip. I found that, just riding between Hamilton and Auckland on my one.
But then again EJK did an AKL/WLG road trip on his FXR a couple of times...
Danae

I'll deal with it :2thumbsup
Yeah you guys can tag along if you like. :] I'll sort out a place and time to meet and give you the address there, don't wanna give this guy's address out on the internet lol. Hoping for fine (enough) weather

Oh, and don't believe the speedo. Cool and '80's digital though it is, it's a liar. When it says you're doing 100 you're actually doing a lot less. I've forgotten the amount mine was out, but it was a lot. Like more than 16% if I remember correctly.
Danae
3rd June 2009, 23:15
I'm used to my scooter speedo's optimism. XD
I'd like to see how off the FXR is when I get it, will be interesting.
Lol I'm going to be so mismatched: white helmet, blue and yellow bike, and black and pink jacket XD everything else is black

Ok, we're either going up SH16 or SH1. SH16 is incredibly fun, however is a bit of a detour? Then through Whangarei, onto SH10 and turn off at his road.
I'm not the best at coming up with routes so any help is appreciated. XD Basically we're heading up near Kapiro Rd.
If we're going up SH16 BP Kumeu is a good place to meet up and fuel up.
Gonna have to leave at a semi-reasonable hour to avoid my 10pm cutoff.
Really excited to meet some new peeps! :bleh:

Are any others tagging along? I wouldn't mind coming for a ride, at least for part of the trip, a bit of SH16, maybe to Wellsford...
But what time are you leaving?

Exactly; "long trip" is a relative thing. My point was it's a long trip for a noob (unfamiliar with gears, clutch), on a little bike that has a seat which becomes uncomfortable about 20 minutes into a trip. I've done trips on an FXR150, so I can attest to that! :spanking:

other notes: FXR speedo is typically 20% out, they are bearable for long trips if you stop often.

for those who don't know:
unfortunately due to uni (specifically the retards running the mechanical engineering dept) handing their 3rd year students a downright offensive amount of work in the last fortnight I have not been able to keep up much with what is happening, let alone eat or sleep. (there are/have been complaints laid. this isn't just lazy students whining; how would you like 12 consecutive 12 hour days after three weeks of literally nothing to do?)
long story short i was the first to hand in our last assignment, left uni at 8am this morning, rode home in zero degrees to a 7 degree flat, put on the electric blanket, emptied the hot water cylinder in the shower, and slept.
alarm was set to 2pm, as arranged to get on the bike immediately to head straight up SH1 to kerikeri
so of course upon waking up, we had three hours to do a three hour trip.
unfortunately, was i more awake and capable of assessing the situation, we could've made it amd just held the seller up. my apologies but that's just the way things happened.
so thank the short notice seller for wasting all of our time. now it turns out i didn't need to ride to kerikeri i could've slept thursday night and produced a much more coherent submission.
begin rant:
here's a protip for anyone trying to sell a bike that a buyer is coming to see from some distance away: if you choose to go hit the pub an hour earlier then be prepared to sell the bike a week later or not at all.
we had the money ready to buy now and i'm about to go looking for something else just on principle, and to visit on our wellington trip this weekend.
I personally do not encourage trips over 100km for unseen bikes, as when it turns out the seller is omitting a fair amount of truth or downright lying, you as a buyer have just spent atleast a tank of gas and several hours of time that could have been spent on a local seller.
the only reason i'm keen on this fxr is it's apparent good condition and low price.

Don't worry about it, nobody's fault really (although we can blame the seller and the mechanical engineering department to feel better about ourselves)

2-smoke, and a bit older, but still a good bike. Nice low K's.
Or even better, and closer, and newer, and very low K's; this CBR150R:

...but by the time i got it back it had a cyclic (comes and goes) knocking sound coming from under the rocker cover :weep:
seller says it's the first he's heard of it and will try to get a mechanic to assess asap
only other 'issue' was how everything vibrated lots at high revs - and by everything i mean EVERYTHING; especially fairings. the fxr fairings stay quiet, cbr makes vibration noise

The VTZ (Spada?) looks pretty sweet. Even though it's older, those motors are awesome, and it's probably a better buy for the money, IMHO.

That vtz will be a naked version of the older vt250 f, which was the most powerful version of the 250 twin honda has made (to the best of my knowledge), being a naked it is probably the same motor as the spada (but different chassis), anyway if you look after the spada motor it'll look after you, its a cracker, you will leave hyosnugs and the new nijas for dead :)

Nonetheless, don't skimp in terms of sacrificing reliability for a cheaper bike. Although our advice will have helped along those lines so far. :)
Also remember that insurance will set you back a bit too!

not for those that know where to look! (and only have a few minor tickets on their licence and no at-fault claims)
i'm paying a little over 300 bucks for 6k full cover and 550 excess
back in '04 my first fxr150 cost me 360 bucks for 3k full cover, 500 excess

the key problem being "work" and "two stroke" so often come in the same sentence

how bout we actually ask google?
http://www.google.com/trends?q=two+stroke%2C+four+stroke
ah, the old useless statistics with no context trick!
from these graphs i conclude the two stroke is less reliable - using the "no news is good news" theorm
who needs statistical significance anyway?

Nice result, great success. Bear in mind "Honda" is also capturing all the searches related to Honda cars, as well as motorcycles, whereas the others aren't as popular in the car industry. Suzuki make cars, but they're not in the same league as Honda. Yamaha make other stuff, like boat engines, guitars, electronic equipment, and Kawasaki make garden tools and stuff; but same thing -- not in the same league as Honda cars, in terms of what people would search for in Google. Still, Honda FTW!

honda - cars, scrub bars (meaty weedwhackers). that's it asfaik.
yamaha - bikes (r1/r6/motogp get a lot of press), boats, jetskis, woodwind (includes saxophones) and piano intruments, drums (iirc) and much more
kawasaki - kawasaki heavy industries. 'nuff said.
suzuki - some cars. pretty much fail was it not for the plethora of gixxer binned threads
hyosung has even poorer results
