From this morning's Press:
An investigation is underway after a marked police car hit another vehicle in Nelson yesterday. Preliminary investigations indicated both cars were travelling in the same direction on SH6 at Atawahi, when the driver of the police car did a U-turn in front of the following car at 10:45 am, Senior Sergeant Stu Koefoed said. No-one was injured but both cars were moderately damaged, he said.
hmmm, maybe they need to think about adding a u-turn cirriculum at police colledge

So ... the following car was not able to stop within half the clear distance of roadway ahead of them .... but hey, it MUST be the cops fault ... eh !!!

What the fuck ever.
Until recently we lived right about where that accident took place. Doing a u-turn there is lunacy, or as it is now known; the 'Bridgman Manoeuvre'.
A lot of bikes go down that stretch of road, it's a freaking State Highway, a 100k zone. Coulda been a heck of a lot worse, be interesting to see what his excuse is, if any. (Probably looking for a better work story; something to add to the 'fiction' category no doubt.)

Now be fair, he did a u-turn in the middle of the goddamn road. When cars do that, they take up a fair emount of space :pinch:

I'll guess the driver of the following vehicle will be accused of something and have their reputaion/credibility et al called into question.

To be fair, only the most retarded of imbeciles wouldn't A, fail to see the MARKED pol car in front of them and B, not be able to slow down enough to avoid hitting said police car.
Its as if he just ripped up the hand brake into a 180 and the smoke from his spinning tyres blinded the poor man behind him.

Both cars have frontal damage, it looks like the cop turned on the following car. The fuckers did that to my daughter last December and then charged HER for driving over the double yellow coz she was trying to avoid them.
You can't defend the indefensible. The cops have already admitted he did a u-turn; "At this stage the indication is that he [the police officer] did a U-turn in front of the following car," Mr Koefoed said.
Sheesh.

I cant belive some of you fucks are thinking the coppers in the clear.
You all seem to think the cop did a u-turn while the following car was miles away.
The fact seems to be the copper didnt check over his fucking shoulder and done a you-e infront of the car cutting him off.
You know the rule about failing to give way????

I have seen similar things happen down this way. A car (vehicle) pulls to the left of the road after indicating left. Stops ... checks mirrors ... see's no-one on his side of the road in his mirrors ... pulls out/u turns in front of a car (vehicle) passing wide on the road, to avoid possible trouble from parked car. and FAILS. ...
Stay on your side of the road.

Fair enough, although you can't draw a reasonable conclusion without all the facts.. If the cop did indeed make a fuck up, well then it sucks to be him as he will probably be tarred and feathered.

No need to take it to heart there man, the full details haven't been released yet, so you can't make a properly informed conclusion aye.
The cop being a twat and not looking before he turned is not the only plausible explanation for this..
And yes, thank you I am well aware of the give way rules.

If the police officer was found to be at fault there were options that could be explored around retraining, Mr Koefoed said.Would the old '20 lashes' be an option??

Cops make fuck ups... what a surprise.
We've all seen a far far higher ratio of faggots in their tin tops doing stupider shite than this. Given the mileage cops do in a year, it's no surprise they trash a few cars in this manner. Sure they should check over their shoulders, just like the rest of us, but occasionally they don't and they nail some poor sucker, just the rest of us.
Sucks to be human.
I'm far more upset about the standard of driving from the average NZ wank stain than I am over the driving standards of the NZ Police.

I'd like to hear the creativity required to pin a following too close when you hit the front of the car in front of you.
Just remember, a U-turning car, especially a cop car turning for pursuit, is rarely stationary. Therefore, the following or clear distance rules don't necessarily apply. If you look at the pics from the buller gorge crash 18 months ago you will see that there is evidence that the cop car was still moving at the time the left hand bike hit the car. The recommended following distance is 2 seconds, mainly to allow for reaction time. Do you think its possible for someone to do a uturn in front of you without you haven't enough time to react, let alone menouver. I know for a fact it is.

Who said anything about hitting the back??? The story wasn't about a car running into the back of a police car. It was a story about a car running into a 'U' turning police car! this would indicate a smack in the side of said police car. Even the dear old plod have a responsibility not to pull out in front of approaching traffic unless it is safe to do so?

If the cop did a u-turn from his position in the left hand lane, it would immediately take him out of the path of the following car. It's an obvious case of mis-reporting. More likely, the cop pulled to the left verge in order to make the u-turn (with or without indicating is the question) and the following car assumed he was pulling over so went to pass as the cop starting his u-turn.

From yesterday's Christchurch Press:
...The officer had been charged with careless driving after the crash on June 1...
...He allegedly did a U-turn...
...He failed to see a following car...
...The officer would appear in the Nelson District Court on July 3...
All will be revealed.

You forgot to mention that the 'alleged' u-turn was performed to nail a speeding driver who was travelling in the opposite direction.

Yeah yeah...what happened to the expectation that those who enforce (traffic) regulations should display a higher standard of driving than the rest of us plebs? The precedent was set in the outcome of the Buller Gorge incident. Namely, if a cop fucks up s/he will be subject to a higher penalty than 'ordinary' plebs.
