The weather reports were looking good for Sunday and they were nearly right as we arrived at the track with blue skies overhead but wet track under-foot.
This time, Clubmans had our own race (previously we raced with the post-classics) with 13 entries and the programme was for 3 races with a somewhat optimistic 4th round scheduled if time permitted.
Clubman qualifying was last but we were race 3 in the schedule. I hoped this would mean that we would definitely get at leat 3 races in the day.

Qualifying (Clubmans)
The track was dry with the exception of Castrol so I had to be very careful getting on the throttle going on to the back straight, but I felt pretty good with my pace and I gave it loads on the rest of the dry track.
I qualified 6th out of 13 but my fastest lap was also my personal best with a 1’09, on a less than perfect track!

Race 1
The track was now fully dry but it was pretty cold even though the sun was shining. I tried a different starting technique this time, held the throttle at about 7000rpm and when the lights went out pulled a monster wheelie so had to shut the throttle loosing a few places, I managed to get on the gas again hard and got back a couple of spots around Jenians so I was in 7th behind Richard Driver on his Triumph 675. I chased him for the first 2 laps then managed to out-brake him going into the hairpin, but I was in the wrong gear for the exit so he came straight past me again through the first left-hander. I hung on to him again for the next 2 laps and managed to get past on the straight because my bike was a bit quicker at the top end. I could see we were catching the 2 bikes in front too but with only 2 more laps weren’t quite able to catch them. Michael Cross went wide at Castrol on the last lap but rejoined just in front of me, I chased him down the straight and nearly went into the back of him braking for the hairpin, I followed him round the hairpin and again nearly went straight into the back of him on the exit as I got on the power earlier. I throttled off for a heartbeat to avoid a collision, which was enough for him to pull away and beat me across the line so I ended up finishing 6th.

I managed to go even better in the race and got a new personal best with a 1’07

This was the most fun race I’ve had because I was doing some proper racing and there were a few of us running very similar times so there was always someone to chase.

Race 2
It just started spotting with rain as we went out to form up on the grid and it was getting very grey, but the track was dry so lets race!
I really wanted to get a good start this time because I knew I could run with the 2 600’s who were ahead in the first race. Unfortunately I got too good a start and jumped the lights. It was great! Into 4th behind the 1000’s and I was just hanging with them for the first lap. As I came over the start line I saw a black board with my number on it, I thought I was being black flagged so I went round again and the board was still out so I pulled off the racing line and slowed down and came into the pits. Asked why I was black flagged only to be told it was just to tell me I had a 20sec penalty for jumping the start. Bugger! Off I go again. One lonely lap, then on the last lap I get lapped by the leader and manage to overtake the guy running last to grab 12th out of 13 across the line. I think the penalty was still added even though I came into the pits so my official position was 13th.

The result is rubbish but that first lap felt so good and I really think I could have held that position for the race to finish top 600.

There was only 1 more race after ours and then the rain really came down and the rest of the meeting was cancelled. This must have been very frustrating for about half the guys there as they only got one race, but there had been some bad crashes in the dry so I think cancelling for safety was the right thing to do.

Big thanks to all the AMCC staff and marshals for putting on the day so we could race. Also thanks to Richard for towing me along to my best times and to Gar for helping out in the pits.

See you all next season :done:

Great racing Chris ! Pity about the second race confusion as you were looking in good form there. When you didn't come around again I thought the worst only to be confused seeing you coming down pitlane.

Also good lap times considering how cold it was !

Will we see you during the Winter series ?

You were looking good out there. Can definitely tell you're getting faster and faster. Not much longer in clubmans for you. :shutup:Sorry about blackboarding you - really neat to see someone who understands that's all part of racing though and not only doesn't throw their toys but totally accepts it! GREAT ATTITUDE - you'll go far!!!!!

Yeah, I think it was a good call. When the weather went around 180 degrees and started blowing a big southerly and those dark clouds rolled in, I thought it would get touch and go weatherwise as the rain was coming ands did it ever hose down.

Was 6 degrees celsius at 4pm on the way home in the car. Screw racing in the winter!

Hey Chris

Excellant race report me ol mate.
Just remember all track time is good tracktime mate dont worry about the placings just know everytime you get out there you will gain experience and without even knowing it youl get better and better i mean just read the race report you got 2 sec's better in one meeting mate sweet!

Im reading a great book at the mo called "A Twist of the Wrist II" if you havent already read it it will be a revelation to your racing.

In the mean time good luck Chris, hope to catch you up soon on the track.

Cheers

Awesome Chris! Great read....sounds like your getting pretty quick too mate! Well done. Are you coming to Manfield for VMCC round 2?

Hey, thanks guys for your support. :niceone:
I felt really good coming away from the day having made such a big overall improvement. On average, every lap was about 3 secs quicker than the first time I raced there back in December. It was also encouraging to see that the general pace of the F2 boys was about 2 secs slower than in December.
I'm not reading anything into this though. I would still have been dead last in the F2 race!
I'm not doing any racing over winter, but I am really keen to get down to Manfield in the spring, maybe for round 5 or 6 in September/October, as I've not been there at all and it looks like an interesting track.
I'm gonna get some bits sorted on the bike over the winter and come out fighting hard next season.
Good luck in the winter series :wavey:

Sorry about blackboarding you

What the story about blackboarding for a jumped start??
I understand he wasn't being black flagged, so what's the blackboard for and is this normal??
I too would have come in.

The board is just to let the rider know that they have recieved a 20 sec penalty. I was anoyed, but hey, that's racing, I should have known the rules properly, I'm not blaming anyone but myself.

DVS, I think I will stay in Clubman for now, having only done 3 race meets I still have so much to learn. If I do get down to Manfield I will definetely race Clubman as I've never ridden that track.
But my aim is to get into F2 before the end of next season and not embarass myself!

But as you said on the day, what is the relevance of displaying this to the rider on the track ? Normally a bike number is displayed with a black flag and so it was understandable that you interpreted this as a black flag. But jump starts, at a club level, are an automatic time penalty which is added to the results.

There are some riders who won't continue if they have that penalty and in the past there has been some flack from race organisers for not letting the riders know at the finish of the first lap that they have been penalised.

It's a good point though that perhaps at the riders brief the penalty rules and the board are explained.

There were a few riders that came in after jumping the start for exactly the same reason. Good attitude though Kittitamer - people could learn a lot from you!!!! :first:

Why would you not continue? I would be trying to make up the penalty! OK, that may be a bit hard in a 6 lap race....
As for people getting pissy, whats the point? There's no big prizes being lost here, particulaly in Clubmans.
I do think this needs to be covered in the riders briefing though.
I'm treating all this as a learning experience and you can bet I won't be jumping the start again - that's the reason for the penalty after all isn't it?

Hayden Fitzgerald jumped the start also in one of the F1 races. He realised what he'd done, brought the bike to a stop, let everyone passed, waited for a bit then took off. He STILL got the 20sec penalty.

Same happened to me, I came into the pits but still got the 20sec penalty. I think it should be a ride through OR a penalty and the officials could have dropped the penalty because we came through the pits.
For me it made the difference between 12th and 13th, big deal, doesn't matter. Even for Hayden, he would have only gained 1 spot too.
I've seen WSBK races where a rider has jumped the start, then hesitated and gone again once eveyone else has gone, effectively loosing loads of time and still getting hit with a ride through.
The moral is, if you jump the start, keep it pinned, know the rules and take the penalty :spanking:

PS - Sharky, I was admiring the paint job on your bike all day, it looks mint :niceone:

There is alot to be said about reading the rule book aye ...
A good idea to go over the penalty rule at riders breifing but if the rule is printed into the suplimentary rules each rider gets on entry there should be no confusion. That saves time at the briefing and more time on the track , an informed rider is a safer and happy little bunny.

Does it really matter that much ? You still get to do the race and we're not exactly racing for Sheep Stations. Just take it up the bum and enjoy the fun, you might even make up the 10 seconds ? gaz.

Cheers mate. Did you see what it used to look like? Yellow with smashed fairings and dents all over it. Not hard to make an improvement eh.
