I don't have a garage

I have a cheap 2x2.5 tin shed which is where the WR lives.

the KLR is under the carport behind the car

the DT is down the side of the house under a bike cover.

if I sold all of the above I could get a nice garage to work on my bikes...

Not puttin up photos of mine either cos its a pigsty at the moment.( for 3 weeks of the year it isn't a pigsty). Got double garage that I share with wifeys car, but shed has a bathroom and kitchen and bedroom which is also full of motorbike shit. Need to knock walls down to make a bigger pigsty.

Mine is always a pigsty...

Actually a pigsty would be something to aspire to. when I used to work in a workshop I was tidy and organised. Not sure what went wrong.

problem now is I don't have access to all the cool gear that me engine shop had and it gets really frustrating when a simple 10 minute job takes ages and ages.:bash:

Skinny_Birdman
4th June 2009, 08:23
Now this is the life. Internal access fully lined double garage. Long enough and tall enough to fit work's double cab Hilux (never putting it in there again though). No space wasted on cars, just three bikes, two mountain bikes, tools and assorted competing hobbies. :wari: Now if only I could figure out why the bloody thing leaked... And if only the Council didn't give us these f***ing enormous recycling bins which take up half of the space.

Crappy cell phone pics below, the best I can do :crybaby:

Yes, they are good. A little limited in capacity compared to real Pelicans but I usually take far too much stuff anyway. (OTOH, real Pelican 1550s were about $350+, the Craftechs from Bunnings were $99). Latches can be a bit tight to operate, but I doubt if they will ever pop open unexpectedly, if you're paranoid there is provision for a padlock. I had a weeks worth of clothes in one case, the other case was tools, tie downs, compressor, etc. Sleeping bag/tent/air mattress, etc went in a cricket gear bag on the carrier. If we hadn't been camping at the Brass the gear bag woudn't be required.
The colour is a bit naff but would be ok on a Suzuki. Makes the back of the bike a bit more visible.

I might try and get a pic of mine over the weekend. I don't have power (have to run an extension cable) so no lights except for the 500w spot lamp in the corner - not good for taking pics with.

same money would keep you in tyres for a couple of years.Yep, I'd rather be riding than sitting in the shed looking at bling.

A nice tool chest would be great, but not a priority. For years I resisted putting all the tools up on the wall, as I used to take the toolbox to each trailride. Don't do that anymore; just take what I carry on my back, sometimes throw in a couple of loose tools if I know I'm going to use them for final prep.

So next priority is to rack all the tools on the wall, along with all the bottles/cans/etc. Got some good ideas on that stuff, plenty comes up from threads like this. If you want to feel poor, go read the advrider threads like this one. Some people have some serious moolah to spend on their sheds/toys.

i hear ya there.
is where i got the idea from.

some of them garages in the states are, better than the bike shop workshops in town.

lino on the floors,i thnnk one guy had carpet in his garage.
and the tool boxes, are massive.
big $$$$ over there.

I am lucky as my garage is a good size. You will see that it has two cars, two motorbikes (that is my DRZ400 hiding behind KT) and a trailer with some bits and pieces thrown on it. A third car could easily fit it.

I have a pile of tools on the bench, I don't know what to do with half of them but luckily Phreaky Phil knows what they are for!!

I have a new Partner so there is lots of bits and pieces in the shed from her previous house, hence the big beer fridge with a microwave sitting on top. Luckily her car has a tow bar for the trailer (my ex got the car with the tow bar!)

A friend is a real estate agent, he has people interested in my house but all I can think of is if I sold is where would I get another house with a garage this size!

I'm with you there Bart. A few of the Nelson boys have seen mine, bit of a dark dungeon, but it serves it's purpose. It's packed with 4 motorbikes, assorted tyres, assorted spares for all bikes, 3 mountain bikes, 2 kayaks, 2 chainsaws, powertools, handtools, garden tools etc etc, but hey even tho wifey keeps telling me to clean it up, at least I know where everything is:niceone:

I'm a bit embarrassed by mine as well. At least I can move around since we sold the trailer and he kayaks. You can see the orange power cord by the door that I have to run to the laundry every time I want to weld/drill/work at night etc. Tools are all in tool boxes cause I cart them around to siblings to fix their cars etc etc too often still. Home made benches are a PITA. The one with the vice tends to "walk" around a bit when hacksawing. I should dyna bolt it down.

One more coat of paint for the pannier racks then they can go back on. Waiting for day with temps over 10 degrees though - I've been waiting 3 or 4 weekends now!

Same here, it doesn't help that mine contains a trailer full of builders mix and has builders mix all over the floor from mixing it. And I've somehow got to find enough space on the floor to empty said trailer of builders mix so I can load the huge ass arc welder thats taking up room onto it that i'm storing for Bro in law till I take it to Hamiltron next time I go.

Oh, and the 4 bikes take up a fair bit of room. Anyone want to buy a Ducati 888? I need the space!

One of three on the property, but by far the least leaky.

It's probably a massive fire bomb waiting to happen. There is a load of old used oil & tyres in the pit.

Last time I was welding I noticed that I had left a fuel can in the shelf under the workbench. I guess that would do it...

By the way the Gilera doesn't really belong there. Mandy never puts it away, but she insisted that it make an appearance in at least one of the photos. You'll recall it has recently stayed in the man cave for repairs, so I guess it has some rights here....

This is my man cave. It is in disarray as I had a mishap this past weekend...
The Husaberg I was going to hopefully sell siezed somewhere near Operau, Kawhia. I had to dump it in a paddock, hop on the back of a KTM 950, not in the least bit comfortable with two big blokes!
It doesn't look good for the bike...
I cannot move the kick-start lever, it will turn just a bit but makes a noise or clunk. Possible Con rod, big end nearing I dunno...
Anyway, as you see the banana boxes there, well, this is for the spare parts...
The good news is...
The 2004 Husaberg I have has now been assembled, tested and ridden....It has new bits, old bits and borrowed bits from the 2005, I spent all day getting it looking good. I am happy, although I have now an engine that is suitable for a mooring for a small dinghy...:2thumbsup

Tenzing was a good step for having ago at a large twin cylinder adv bike and for getting my wife on the back to go adventuring with me (previous bike was a DR650 so not good for pillioning). On both counts it was very successful. Aples and Oranges is a fair comment though - Tenzing is almost 20 years old. Power and ergonomics are the most instantly obvious differences.

No thanks. I've broken my neck once - no need to do it again. This is all about wife and I going touring in a bit more comfort, as you know I'm a little on the bigger side and take up too much of Tenzing's seat. I'm sure I'll get it dirty every now and then as well. Besides I like my job and given the changes to the organisation I work for and the new policy around licences I will be being very careful about the loosing licence zone :msn-wink:

That's why you need more than one bike. But the ultimate solution would be a switch on the left hand block that toggles between my BMW GS and the KTM 525 while on the move....... Now how hard could that be huh?? Maybe electronic tyres with automatically protruding knobs once the surface consistency gets below a certain hardness. Hover bikes would be interesting but would just not be the same IMO.

Got a thumbs up reply and a smile so game on. In reality I've been pining for one of these for a few years now so she probably just said yes to shut me up! We have plans for two 9 day rides (around NI and SI) for this summer so there will be plenty of "quality time" if I can keep the exhaust from playing is awesome high rev tunes.

Waiting for the fall out to start ? :bash::bash::Oops::angry2:

:bleh: Seeing as I had a DR650 in a previous life and that is my base line, I'd say the 950S is just a rediculously powerful DR650 with damn good suspension. I'm keen as to get out on some gravel, hills, sand, mud, river beds etc i.e. everywhere I took the DR.

My man space is starting to come together now, since I bought my place last August I have spent much more time redecorating the workshop than I have working on beautifying the adjoining shack. I'll get some pix tonight.

I've been pining for one of these for a few years now so she probably just said yes to shut me up!

No shit almost offered you a rag for a bib the other day when we were out with Blackballs.
Congrats big fella, you have been very patient!

I just bought a new bike this week as well.
Are selling the DR350 as was missing the electric start to much!
Now proud owner of 2002 DRZ400 bought off TM from Timaru.
Just need to change bearings etc on front supermoto wheel to fit (different diameter axle).

Washes out with no residue, has no brighteners and no perfume. It says in the destructions to store your hunting clothes in a bag with leaves etc from the area you want to hunt in.

Maybe I should try that with my bike. Store the tyres wrapped in mud from the place I want to ride. Maybe that will give me better grip?

Last year I started looking around for a shed. I discovered most of 'em came with a house, but eventually I found a property for sale, in the right place, with a respectable 1:1 house area : shed area ratio. So I am now the proud owner of a fairly new 6m x 9m shed. (It came with an old bach to live in, a decent size section, an overgrown garden & the all important lemon tree.)

The shed is divided into a 6x6 garage/workshop area & a 3x6 lined side room. I got some concrete paint down on the floor, lined the back wall with some MDF I had, then installed a big solid workbench that had come from the old farm workshop & put in a heap of lights as I hate working in a dingy workshop. I just finished adapting an old cabinet to hold all the powertools, next I'm going to install some shelves on the left side for junk/treasure storage, put a steel top on the right end of the bench for a welding area & get a nice beefy bench drill press.

I just finished painting the walls in the side room with random leftover paint. It works well as a gear storage area & I'd like to put in a wider door from the garage so I can move the bike in while welding/grinding etc in the main workshop. A couch/bed also needs to go in for visitor accom.

Cheers

The paint is a bit slipperier than concrete if wet, but not too bad. Dry it's fine. It was Dulux aquatread & is supposed to resist being lifted by hot tyres but a few bits have come off from that, dunno if other brands or an oil based paint may have been better? It does a great job of making the floor easy to clean though.

The signs came out of the skip at a Works yard - they had just replaced all their daggy ones & thrown them out. Totally legit honest :shifty:

A couple of weeks back, I took the Missus into Motomail to buy her a new set of riding trou, cos she had farted the seams out of the waterproof liner of her current ones. They must have been too tight around her ankles.

Having found and purchased an appropriate garment we sat down for a snack and a coffee in the cafe at the front of the shop. Turned out that the guy sitting across from us and discussing things motorcycle and mechanical, was Ken MacIntosh.
Fascinating!
For example, he uses a drill press and a set of bathroom scales to measure spring rates. Had some interesting comments about Kevin Schwantz riding one of his creations around Puke a couple of months back.

I haven't got OCD honest, hang on, is that one of my posters 0.5 degress misaligned

It is actually a little tidier than normal as the side room had just been re-assembled after moving everything for painting & I'd just finished the tool cabinet project & had a tidy up. The bench is about to get covered in grubby Lexus V8 parts as the next job in there is to work out why the Landcruiser is suddenly pissing oil out the front of the crank.
