Hi there Kiwi Bikers. I just got my learner license today but I have no motorbike yet.
Can you please recommend the cheapest brand new learner bike possible? So far the cheapest I've come across is a Suzuki GN 125 from Wellington Motorcycles at $3,000. Are there any new motorbikes out there that are cheaper by chance? I'm cash strapped at the moment unfortunately.
Thanks. :wari:

Hello and welcome to the site.
Three grand is pretty cheap for a new bike. To get any cheaper you would have to get some chinese or similar unknown brand, possibly of TradeMe.
I would steer clear of these chinese bikes.
You would be much better of, buying a second hand jap bike in good condition.

My cbx250rs is for sale :-)Its a jap bike, better than a gn, though same middle riding position, and radial valves + 2x carbs on the single cylindar. George the MC doctor has gone over it recently, good service history etc etc...looking for around 1600...

Korea. Still a bit lacking in the quality stakes but not too bad really. Someone has posted recently about having a bad experience with that Nexa one on trademe... Chinese bike

hmmm I've heard alot of bad things about chinese bikes..Yeah they are very frustrating.. We have a couple (er, four!) of chinese pocketbikes, and there is ALWAYS something to fix on them, but hey they are racebikes so thats the way it goes.

I second that!!! Dont bother with a Nexa they are cheap for a reason and the sales people arent exactly bikers. But if all you want is a cheap bike to get through your license then its good for that. Although I dont think anyone will give a great deal for a trade to a better bike (ive asked) It took them 2 months just to get me the owners manual (which tells you nothing) and as for their statement "5000km 12 month warranty" they aint good for it. Mine broke down so I sent them an email to enquire and basically they asked if I was out of gas. Which was not the case. They only gave me the manual because I was wanting it and pushing them for a refund. Anyway I still currently have the bike and will look to trade up when I get my restricted. Its ok for running around town. Oh and another thing, they claim the top speed to be 110k, its actually 95k.

Yeah I guess I have $3,500 maximum to spend possibly $4000 absolute max on both a motorbike and gear. I need to buy from a shop so that I can use my credit card. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Surely a bank loan would give you lower interest than a CC? Or do you intend to pay it up within the 55 days?
You are not necessarily forced to buy new either. Although bikeshop trade-ins are usually overpriced.

Isn't there a way you can pay people via Trademe with your credit card? Is that what Pay-Pal is?

I've bought a 2008 TLC 250cc Lifan ( a Chinese copy of the Yamaha virago).
This bike has so far travelled just 500 odd K's.106 k's since we got it, all done on the tarmac at Ardmore.
It's a mint little bike, goes extremely well considering it is not yet "run in" and is already reaching speeds of up to and including 120Km's p h on the motorway.
Bought this bike through trademe and am very happy with it and all that it is doing for my wife and her new found riding abilities.
Won't be long and she'll be on a slightly bigger bike and riding with me on rides all over NZ.Who knows perhaps a 450 Lifan.

Yeah you can use your credit card to pay for trademe stuff. Though shouldn't you have the money for the bike before you spend it...

Welcome to the madness mate!! As people have said, instead of buying new, I'd buy a second hand Jappa of Trademe or similar. Just make sure you get it checked over by someone who knows bikes or a shop before you do the deal! You can get a lot of bike for 3K.
Good luck mate and whatever you do, ride safe!

I got a brand new yamaha Scorpio for $3000. It was a demonstartor with just 50 k's on it. The Scorpio is heaps better than the GN125 or 250. There are usually plenty of them on Trademe but try ringing round the Yamaha dealers and see if they have a demo for sale. Good luck
