I know the area well having hunted there myself.Back a few years it was quite common to return from a hunt to find your vehicle wrecked (windows smashed, tyres slashed etc) and god help you if you flew over in a chopper as the locals were quite happy to take pot shots at you.
Once when I drove through with heaps of neices and nephews on board I heard one local turn to another and say "Chur bro, meals on wheels".The V8 decided it was time to exit stage left very quickly!

If the hunters were leaving the shooting area, they should have had their weapons unloaded anyway, which means that chances are the very least they would have had to do before being able to shoot the guys was to stick the mag back in the gun and release the bolt (on a semi-auto), at worst get out a box of ammo, load the mag, stick that in the gun, work the bolt.
Also, if they were hunting with bolt action rifles then even if they were loaded the outcome would probably have been shoot one, others run away or shoot one, others stab you to death. Not my kinda odds.
Shooting someone in the kneecaps with a rifle at short range would have been more or less impossible, and also a very dangerous thing to try.
From the bushes it would have been hilarious though... a .308 to the knee would probably relieve the guy of his leg though.
Also a good point about what would happen to you if you got jail time for it, in terms of other MM members going after you...

Yeah. I'm getting pretty pissed off with people going on about how MSSA weapons should be banned completely, semi-autos should be banned completely blah blah blah. I'd be much more worried about someone robbing my house and pulling a knife on me, or pulling a knife on me in town, or cutting me off in traffic and attacking me with a claw-hammer. All things that have happened relatively recently and can very easily have serious consequences. In fact I think I'd probably take being shot over being seriously stabbed any day of the week too...

And when the he shoots one of them and the others swarm him before he can get off any more rounds? When he doesn't get them with an immediately disabling shot and they swarm him? He shoots them all and then gets killed in jail by one of their fellow mob members?

As much as I love the idea of gunning them all down, there aren't many A-cat hunting rifles that I'd trust to put down 7 people if you started shooting when you actually felt your life was in danger, rather than from half the car park away. Unless you've got a shottie with 8 or 9 rounds in it or an MSSA with a 30 rd mag you're either going to be committing murder without justification or risk losing.

I do like the idea of the SAS or police STG being used to eliminate key gang members..
They do it in the states, if a guy can't be brought in under arrest he might have a little accident, you know, where he does his concrete shoes up a ittle tight and goes for a run on the bottom of the ocean..

If the hunters had been able to shoot them, say they each had a 9mm or pump action shotty that was loaded and the goons made a move on them and they had subsequently gone back into the bush and burried each body good and proper, I really wonder if they would have been found at all. Ever.

I lived in and hunted the Waikaremoana area of the Urewera National Park in the 1960's and can tell you it was one of the happiest times of my life.
I also had (almost unlimited) access to most of the Maori and freehold farm land in the Area too.
I don't think in the whole time we were there, that any of that sort of (serious) behaviour was evident.
The Maori people "we" came into contact with "anywhere in the the Area" were fantastic people.
The only indication of any negative change from when we lived there has been the comment from some of the elders and Komatua:
That they are afraid of some of their young ones attitudes today!
So whats different from the rest of New Zealand society today?
Of course I would like to lay the blame (entirely) at Helen Clark's feet but even I think that NZ as whole has to shoulder the blame for this, damn it! :argue: :o
