I've been trying to find a replacement for one of my indicator bulbs and I'm having no luck at all. An auto-electricians and 2 bike shops and a lot of googling later and I'm no closer.

Anywhere local or international with cheap shipping that supplies them? I've found a couple of websites but so far the best cost is $3 each with $30 shipping. Seems a little steep given that I only need one! Instead of stocking up on a few spares the $50 could be spent on replacing the entire indicators.

Go and see Michie's Automotive on Como St in Takapuna... they had BA9S for me in 6V so I'm sure they'll have it in 12V lol (I think it was BA9S... they're common on older Hondas).

That'd be bloody brilliant if possible. Failing that if there is anyone else in the same boat then I'll buy a whole heap from this UK place and send em around.

Is thst like a standard single contact indicator bulb, but with offset pins? My KLR has those - couldn't find them around so got some standard (non-offset pin) bulbs from SuperCheap, pulled one of the pins out. Fitted ok and works perfectly.

Nah, the pins aren't offset or anything, but it seems to be a particularly small base (9mm diameter). Can find tonnes of bulbs in the 1 to 5W range for flashlights and the like but none near 21-23W. Good idea for the offset pins ones though.

Seriously, go and see Michie's Automotive, there was one younger guy there who spent ages on the phone to suppliers sourcing some very unusual bulbs for me. Similar story -- ancient Honda indicators, tiny little 6V bulbs but high wattage. All everybody else had were the same bulbs but 1.5W and 3W for instrumentation backlighting.

The day before (when I didn't have a sample to show him), I saw the rows of shelves they have behind the front desk... unbelievable amounts of really weird electrical stuff... from Lucas generators and zener diodes up til modern German stuff.

Just gave em a ring but the guy said they wouldn't really be able to help without seeing the bulb. If I still don't have one by the next time I'm down in Tauranga I'll call in and see what they can do. Or freight it down if I get desperate... Will definitely keep them in mind for anything else electrical that pops up, cheers!

Are they for the oxford style aftermarket indicators?? If so then Northern Accessories import them and they are available to any GOOD bike shop. Don't deal with the USELESS bike shops.

Model Boat Supplies, Norm & Jan Sisson, Ph/Fax 03 389-0643 . 38 Ottawa Road, Christchurch 6.

This guy has a VERY wide range of bulbs for vintage bikes and cars. He lists a BA9S 20W . Not a 23W though, but a 20W would probably be close enough. Not cheap , but very helpful. No website. No I don't know why a model boat place would have vinatge auto bulbs.

Any chance you got orange? i bought some new indicators that use this size for my 74 CB500. had to get a new relay so they would flash right. The opposite side im indicating to still lights up very faintly. would be good to have some better bulbs to draw more and eliminate this. also my bulbs r cheap chinese shit and are clear with a blob of crappy orange paint on them

Talking to an autoelectrician when trying to find some orange bulbs for my aftermarket inidcators, he said they're ALL like this: they just make clear bulbs and dip them. It's just that the Chinese ones are crappier, probably because they're done by some crippled 7 year old peasant slave girl in Outer Mongolia...

While waiting for a retard on TardMe to replace the clear bulbs he sent me from an auction for orange ones (DO NOT DEAL WITH TRADER CNELL!) I experimented with some cheap $2 Shop nail varnish. Mixed some yellow with some red (I already had it for touching up my FahrtSturm), just a drop or two of red in a whole bunch of yeller, then carefully ainted it on the clear globe. It came up as good as, if not better then the crappy ones he eventually supplied.

Yep, orange ones. Mine had clear in but *shrug* turns out roughly the same with the orange lenses. Lemme know if you want one to play with.

Uhh, I do suppose you searched trademe for "BA9S" ?

edit: the following was nicked of some trademe auction ;

1. Is the base of the bulb 15mm in diameter? If YES, go to 2. If NO, go to 5.
2. Does your bulb have TWO contacts on the bottom? If YES, go to 4. If NO, Go to 3.
3. Does your bulb have ONE contact on the bottom? If YES, it is a 1156 bulb.
4. Are the pins on the side of the base at the same height? If YES, it is a 1142 bulb. If NO, it is a 1157 bulb.
5. Is the base of the bulb about 9mm in diameter? If YES, it is a BA9S bulb. If NO, go to 6.
6. Is the base of the bulb 22mm in diameter? If YES, it is a standard mains B22 bulb.

I found heaps of BA9S bulbs (took me a while to figure out the designation) but none that were the 23W ones I currently had... I think that might actually be the same auctions that pointed me in the right direction...

There's a few types of halogen indicator bulbs as you describe available through bike shops.

I found out the Engo, Oxford and is it Arrow indicators? are not all interchangable as I first thought when one failed.
The base pins have minimal changes in the angle of the pins.
You can get them easily anyhow, just inspect the base.
The length of the quartz globe is not always the same either.
These give much more light output over LED's and you don't even have to change the relay speed.
