View Full Version : Getting a little foggy...

I had my first experience riding in some thick fog early yesterday. It was pretty unreal.

Once I worked out that the reason I couldn't see was because all the mist was collecting on the front of my visor I started riding with my visor up. Then I was totally paranoid that no one would be able to see me in all the fog. Nobody gives way to the bikes as it is and the fog would just give them an excuse!!! :shifty:

:cold: The down side is that it's somewhere around 3-5 degrees when I head out in the mornings now and cruising along at 90-100 with the visor up in the cool weather made my eyes run like crazy - it was like I was bawling my eyes out! :crybaby:

Oh well! Beats sitting in the cue like all the 4-wheeled traffic!

I've attached photos taken this morning of my budgie 'Homer' who decided he'd like to nest in my helmet.

Very cute.

Doh - what's that crazy bird up to?

Fog is freaky - I am always amazed at the number of people who drive fast through it with f-all visibility.:oi-grr:

With no fog light at the back of a bike you are quite vulnerable.

Your riding position will need to depend upon how thick the fog is however you do need to keep safe.

FWIW - I always try and stick behind a car with strpong fog lights so you you can be seen sooner rather than later.

I am thinking about attaching one of those red LED flashy things cyclists use to irritate motorists (and be seen).

Make sure you ride with a high-viz vest. Much easier for others to see you.

Thanks for the advice - I do wear one of those bright yellow vests with the silver reflective strip. The flashing lights does sound like a good idea and I'll try and stick close to a car next time.

I'd never been in the fog before and it probably was only 5-10 min before I was through it and out the other side. It's all good to be experiencing new conditions - and great to get some thoughts on how to make the ride safer. Thanks.

Sorry LBD, well, actually the thread now does have a Ducati Monster on it and nice photo btw.

As for the budgy I wonder if I should get him some leathers! :scooter:

Me too! Just before Tirau on friday. I thought my visor was fogging up on the inside so I was wiping it but it did nothing....then I realised it was on the outside hahahaha!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't hi vis orange be a better bet than hi vis yellow in fog. I'm guessing that yellow may fade into the white of the fog.

Hope Homer didn't leave any surprises in your helmet! :p
