you need to put a comma in your title, otherwise you'll be taking a day off of going fishing - and we can't have that!

Underneath the Southern end of the Paremata train bridge is a good spot. You'll need heavy sinkers to counter the rip. Good for all sorts including kahawai and kingies, although its definately the wrong time of year for kingfish. Blue moki are always worth a try with mussels tied on to 3/0 hooks after dark (fish type baits at night will only catch shit like conger eels). Legal minimum limit for those is 40cm. Plagues of red cod in winter.
Ngatitoa Domain - over the rail way lines and drive straight ahead. Where the road turns, don't. Fish straight off there. As above with heavy sinkers needed, eagle rays are common there along with kahawai and kingfish. Plagues of red cod in winter.
The Plimmerton Boating Club jetty is also worth a try especially if the weathers been a bit rough and all you're hooking at the other spots is sea lettuce. You need a damn good cast off the jetty to the SouthWest. Best spot for a snapper or a rig. Once again the wrong time of year though. Plagues of red cod in winter.
That Paremata Harbour can turn up some real surprises sometimes. The channel near the twin bridges (now there are three) is an interesting place to dive in the right conditions (rare), and it is the only place I've seen large sharks while diving and I've done a hellova lot all around the Wellington coastline. I'd dive there again... but wouldn't splash around on the surface swimming there now.
As far as Wellington goes, the International Terminal in a Southerly, Point Howard Wharf in a Northerly. Floating or drifting pilchards always catches kahawai, or barracouta if you're unlucky. Seatoun Beach with fresh squid for bait isn't a bad spot for an elephant fish. Once again you need a shit hot cast there.
Fishing off the rock platform just North of Shelley Bay Airforce base can be interesting.

Paramata is where I use to go as a boy...:niceone: cought lots of rocks there.
I saw a place on the wellington motorway where there is like a spot where police cars can sit that could be good for parking and allways see birds diving into the sea there. might gove that a try then head out to the wharf.
lol just woke up:doh:

:niceone: Yes it was a good day....... a few kahawai, GOOD size too. the wife loved them, they had it for dinner. Just went to the paramata jetty under the railway bridge.
lost two sinkers and a few hooks on one rod line to light fish won the battle.
Same line I was catching snapper with up in Auckland.
Fantastic day not to cold.

Fishing???? I'd rather be out riding - however, work is boring, so fishing would be a great thing to do instead of being here today......

Am lookin to head out with eldest daughter for a spot of fushin in the next hour or so. Had a quick blast last night (Porirua channel at the domain) but there was nothing but spotty taking chunks out of the bait. Anyone know of anywhere, within easy into the night walkin, where I can hit some "deep" water from a relatively stable platform? Considering anywhere near Porirua - Pukerua or other "easy" access.

Well, I got two rainbow trout on the way home on Friday night - one was a bit small, may have been legal - but I put it back ... the other was delicious ...

Nice... I ended up with an Eel and an Eagle Ray. At least the Eagle Ray tested out the gear and my aging frame and both passed well indeed. Also something severed my line above the rig leaving about 8 inches of serrated line... the rod didn't twitch and the reel (free spooling) didn't click. Been feckin around making all sorts of rigs to test out, hooked just about every finger and have a few gashes on the outside of the knuckles that tension the knots, but t'was to be expected given my lovely soft skin.
I needs new fushun grounds.

Try Moa Point,
I have spearfished off there in the past and there are quite a few Blue Moki that come into that little bay by the ramp. Probably best to use a strayline with low drag and see what you get. Paua are plentiful past the 8m mark if you plan on doing some freediving. Theres a facebook group called NZ Surfcasting, heaps of spots and tips posted up everyday. I haven't idiot sticked in a while but I used to really enjoy it.
One peice of advice I can offer is that current is a good thing, and where there are fish, there are fish.
Good on yah for getting your daughter out there too

Cheers man... will get our arses out there one weekend soon I hope. Eying up Fitzroy Bay for an early morning fish first though... although dunno if the eldest is keen for that kind of time. Meh, might have to go get me some P&Q ;)... although the tides looked fucked for that sparrow fart off :angry2:

Well the eel is in the freezer, but I put the ray back. Having said that, I do love trout.

I've caught and eaten Ray ... they tell me it's an acquired taste ... that's as may be ... I have no wish to acquire a taste for it ..
