I was in Red Baron today and noticed the plates on the new bikes were like
67ZZK, what format and size are they going to be once 99ZZZ is issued?
Does anyone know?

Does it then go to 000AA or A0000?

Don't know - 00AAA > 99 ZZZ will last a long while yet. Why worry?

I think after 67ZZK you get 68ZZK, so there's only about 1500 plates left. In theory, after 99ZZK you'd get 01ZZL

This particular matter also intrigues me and nobody has provided an answer. Once 99ZZZ has been issued, there are no more unique five character sequences that have not been used.

I suspect bikes will get a smaller size version of the usual car plates from that point forward. All we have to do is wait a couple of months and all will be revealed.

I wonder if the system is smart enough to reassign the dereg'd plates?? With all the bikes being written off every two minutes there must be plenty of plates available.

I think you'll find they just add an extra letter (like they did with car number plates when they ran out).

Go to 6 digits? 00AAAA?

Not unless you reverse to alpha numeric like cars.

Go to 6 digits? 00AAAA?

Yes, that would be my expectation. That's what they did with the car plates quite a while ago when they ran out.

Adding a letter rather than a number gets you a lot more combinations.

Slyer
11th June 2009, 17:53
You've forgotten the obvious...
The next lot would be
000AA 001AA
....
000AB 001AB
etc etc

According to my calculations there are over 60 million possible combinations of 5 digit plates, so don't get too worried.

I think it is a little more than that, according to my calculations (which could be wrong)
If they use all 26 letters in the alphabet, there are 17576 combinations to each two digit number, i.e. there are 17576 different possible plates between 67ZZK and 68ZZK. There are still 32 two digit numbers between 67 and 99 so that is 32 x 17576 = 562432 possible combinations left before they run out.
That is not going to happen anytime soon.

There are 1.7 million possible plates with that pattern.

Shit, if we have really used them all up, we really have been crashing a lot of bikes in NZ haven't we?

AHOLE
CUTOFF
RUDE
BAREND
REVIT
WHEELI
STOPPI
EXCESS
CRASH
etc... etc...

This reminds me of a cartoon that appeared around Y2K. A bunch of blokes sitting around in New Testament-looking clothes. One says: "Gentlemen, it's 4 BC, do you know what that means? In 4 years we're going to run out of dates!"

Yeah a piss off that if you want a personalised bike one it's stuck on 5. Plus it's the same horrific price. Consequently I don't have one.

Ahh, but divide that by about 50 years. Also consider all those scooters around the place.

11AAA is the current motorcycle series, now nearly kaput.
111AA is an earlier series for tractors and trailers, kaput.
1AAA1 is a trailers series, kaput or close to it
AAA11 is part of the current series for cars, which allows letter/number combinations from 4 to 6 characters, and which will take some time to become kaput.

Never mind.

Rang the LTSA and asked. They put me through to someone in transport who had to go and ask someone else. But we got there.

The new plates are already out. Happened back March//April (funnily enough the operator on the phone who told me this was named April....)

Strange, they're very keen to take money off me.

Not that I have any at the moment. Although I might have to find some after riding the dorsoduro.

Yes, you would be correct in that.

Was talking to a dealer yesterday and they have sold a couple of bikes with that rego format already. A3CMU was one he mentioned. It sounds like the next will be A4CMU and then A5CMU etc...Strange huh?

Guess its the only way to have more plates available with a huge combination pool.
