Racing in Christchurch

Hey all,

I'm a new rider that is wanting to get out on the track. And I don't mean trundling round on my scorpio at a track day, I mean some racing! I was looking online and found that the Welly club runs a streetstock series which would be fantastic for me if I lived up there. However, I can't for the life of me find anything like that happening in the South Island.

So my question to people here is, is there a series for small learner bikes like streetstocks or 250 mini lites down here? I would love to race and these sound like great places to start. I would of course be getting a racing bike over my scorpio (as much as I love the thing I wouldn't want to risk it round a track), but I don't want to have to buy anything massive to start on.

Bucket Racing is alive and well in Christchurch.
Do a search here for Bucket Racing, and yuou will find all the info you need to keep your eyes amused for hours.
There is a very active group here in Cant, all willing to help each other,
and you will be more than welcome to join them, get involved and learn heaps.
Im sure that very soon an few will pop into this thread and give you directions to what you need to know

We do have streetstock down here run on Suzuki RG150's mainly. We race them at nearly all events as we get to run with the MCC meets and the CAMS meets. This = a lot of tracktime which = good! Yea as above the bucket scene is alive and kicking, nearly 40 people at the start line last sunday. Both of these options are great entry points to racing and you wont regret it.

PM Oyster he's heavily involved with the Street Stock scene in Chch. Otherwise go bucket racing. Both classes are huge down here.

If you have a V-Twin 250 then you can run that in the streetstock class down here but only on a senior licence.

Please, PM Oyster (aka Peter Jones).
He is one of the Junior motorcycle sport coordinators for Motorcycling Canterbury.
Their Streetstock racing and COACHING programme is the biggest and probably best in NZ. They regularly have 30-40 riders (young and not so young) on their 150's and now 250's.

Please let the guys know, when you catch up to them, where you tried looking for information. Lots of other riders have found them, so there must be info out there.

All of the bike stores in Chch especially STREET AND SPORT MOTORCYCLES would have been able to steer you in the right direction.

PS: Pete, if this guy could not find out about you then there must be a failure of marketing somewhere along the line, e.g MC Cant website.

To my knowledge Motorcycling Canterbury is the only club in the country that provides specific training sessions within race meetings. Anywhere else you will have to go straight on the grid for a race. (crazy eh...)
The club also has 3 RG 150's for trainees, 2 KR 150's for the trainers. These RG's are always available for new riders to be introduced safely into the sport via training. Put a ring around 18th July and we'll get you going (safely) at Levels

Hey guys,

Thanks all for the fantastic replies and news! I can't wait to get out and do some racing. To be honest the first thing I did was a net search and the motorcycling canterbury site didn't really help me at all...

I completely forgot about this site until today and thought 'what the heck!'

Turns out my post count isn't high enough to pm (?) so I'm just going to reply...

I'm willing to do whatever it takes to race. My old man raced back in the day (way back in the day) and I would love to get on any old thing and race. It's good news about the rg 150's as this was exactly the type of thing I was going to buy and start learning to race on. I'll clear any day that needs to be cleared to race. :)

I figure I'm going fast enough on the roads now and the port hills do get slightly stale after the 50th time on the same bike. The only real place to go faster is the track anyway so it seemed logical.

I'm going to assume I have to join motorcycling Canterbury? I will gladly do this.

Think its 45 bucks to join MCC.....I think you also need to join MNZ as well which is around $90. Man your going to love it !!:2thumbsup

Technically you dont have to join anything, At least i wasnt for my first few...
Just a day licence and i was good to go.
