Big Labour win in Mt Albert

Lee (Nat) 3,426 17%
Norman (Green) 2,418 12%
Boscowan (Act) 943 4.7%

Can't find the voting figures from '08 for the electorate but would appear Labours majority in the seat has increased significantly. Probably not a suprise that Nationals showing was so poor considering the candidates ineptitude on the campaign trail but very suprised Act couldn't pick up more disaffected National voters, though this could also show Wodneys popularity regarding super city having an effect. Greens would have to be happy with their 12% of vote.
All in all labour must be pretty bloody happy with result and in particular Goff as an indication of the acceptance of his leadership of the party, now all he needs to do is by that bike he's yearning for and they'll be able to put up a credible fight at the next general.

I'd say so. Less people vote when they know it is going to be a complete landslide and when John Key was saying that she wasn't going to get it is when you know shes screwed...

Not that impressive when you take into account where New Zealand and the "blue" Labour party are at!

National is not a right wing political party, it's just a blue Labour clone!

Mt Albert is an absolute bastion of socialism in NZ, (Helen Clark wasn't there for nothing) it was never going to change, even without the current "issues".

Key, hung Lee out to dry, she deserved better support than that from him.

Key has passed Rodney Hide the poison chalice of reorganising a dysfunctional rabble into a functional Auckland Super City!(Yeah right)

A no win situation for Rodney no matter what the outcome! (if there ever is going to be one?)

Phil Goff reminds me of a turkey strutting his stuff in support of thanksgiving!

David Shearer is likely to replace him as the next "leader of the Labour party"!

The one who has come out of this bi-election with the most egg on his face (IMHO) is John Key, probably now destined to be a one term wonder!

When New Zealander's actually really do get hungry enough, they might wake up and think.

Mediocrity is conceived of the left and remedied on the right of the political spectrum in this (or any other) country.

I had voted Nats in the election but couldn't stomach voting for an airhead like Lee, so passed my vote to Act. Better to be centrist that a left leaning loony.

IMHO Lee managed to screw everything up - real talent there ! Even her "Sorry I lost, thanks for helping" speech showed a complete lack of preparation, with her struggling to cope with the basic reality of politics, that is to say more lose than win.

Mr. Key showed a complete lack of support.

The most interesting thing was the poor showing for the greens.

I would have thought that Ms Lee was possibly the worst candidate the Nats could have offered, and the Greens offered their best.. but still came a distant third.

Status quo in a diehard left wing electorate with a low voter turnout and with a poor National candidate that scored a few own goals. Hardly a barometer of national opinion.
