I love my Road King with its mustang seat it really give me the pleasure to cruise around 1 or 2 up, can't even feel the pillion. Plenty of power and good cornering ability for a big cruiser.

twin shocks are easier and cheaper to adjust and upgrade then the softtails.....
Carburators easier for DIY then injection...
removable panniers/bags are easier to live with then the "fixed" ones.
Windshields give u so much more protection from the elements....
Shop around, there are some real nice well priced new and used examples at the dealerships.
Enjoy...

I have a feeling that a Buell isn't quite a tourer......
Mind you, forward contols and saddle bags.....hmmm...possible.

I can only tell you what I have experienced. The FXR I had (with Progressive suspension at both ends) was comfy enough to go to sleep on, handled well enough and carried anything I could throw at it.
I'm currently on a 200 FXDWG, which is very comfy, doesn't quite do the corners like the FXR did but hey. it looks cool.
For the ultimate in comfort, buy a Caddy.

New or used? If new you probably cant go past the new grannyglides. abs, shock absorber in the rear wheel, bigger fuel tank. Although considering they are 96" they are a bit gutless. Nothing money wont fix. I used to have an old evo flh, terrible handling and super gutless.
Had a 95inch FXDXT which was an FXDX, adjustable suspension, bit more ground clearance, + T for touring. Detachable bags, adjustable windsheild, comfy seat, rider & passenger. Was pretty good, I would have another one. Dont think they make them anymore. Went to the Brass monkey on a Sporty, could of been worse, I might have still had my bonny.
At the moment I have an FXDX and a Buell Ulysses. Anything more than a day trip I prefer the Buell. Underseat storage, comfortable, easy to strap bags etc on it. I could set the DX up for touring but would need a new seat and have to make some sort of pannier/luggage rack bizo. And I cant be bothered. You can buy all that stuff but it costs an arm and a leg.
So I'm with Ken, the best Harley is a Buell ! (It must be a Harley because you can join HOG)

Three votes for the XB12X.
Extra long travel Showa suspension and the centralised mass make it extremely well suited to NZ conditions.
Road King if you want to keep to the roads with the Red Shield numbers.

My '06 Road King came with Showa suspension as standard. Nothing flash though. Forks lacked adjustment (still bloody do) and had even lost the air valve present on my '02 RK.
For '09 the touring range has been substantially improved (they say) with a better, stiffer frame. You can even get an entry-level E-Glide Standard for about $27k (great value if y'ask me). That's with the six speed box and 96" motor.
Anyway, if I was in the market for a tourer, that's what I'd go for. Or maybe a Rocket III tourer.... Hmmmmm. Naaaaa. What am I saying? It'd have to be the Harley.

I no fan of the six speed gearbox. It would do fine with three.

Faults? They have faults? No way... My bike has no faults. Just a few little 'idiosyncrasies'.
Hitcher, dunno, if I spelt that right, but I can't be arsed to check. You can correct me if I'm wrong lol.

Number 1 is the Road King ,its the way to go.You will need to change the standard seat to give your pillion more comfort.Number 2 Heritage softtail classic.Bit harder to adjust rear suspenders but still a good tourer. Both come with screen & panniers standard... Go look at www.ktlbikes.co.nz great people.Ask for Emma or Kerry..Plenty of harleys to pick from

best value for money hd tourer is the electraglide, nobody wants them second hand and they are dirt cheap
Forget the road queen, the glides have a far better fairing which adds up to a far more comfortable ride if you are doing serious miles, also glides are far cheaper in comparison
If you are buying new then the road king would make better sense as it has better resale
Top box is an added bonus and can be removed in about 5 minutes, its only held on by 4 bolts
Motor wise the evo is a better bet, not as quick as the twin cam but it will last forever, the twin cam has a throw away crankshaft and throw away cases, also the later injection and engine managment systems may give loads of grief (and it may not), the evo can be converted to points which are simpler, the twin cam does not have this option

How about because I care and wanted to share that you can have a pillion without making a big compromise :done:

The Evo can be built and rebuilt (and for some reason they sound nicer) but look after a TC and it should outlast you. Crank issues are supposed to be pretty much confined to '07 models (time will tell) and Jims do a timken conversion kit if you feel the need. It's also getting harder to find an unadulterated Evo.

Our Wiltshire cutlery set has a shitload of forks but, oddly, no soup spoons.
