Did it today with Jt & Daffyd. Track is mint, definitely will be there sunday but as the track can take longer than expected better if we
** meet there at 9am **
You go down wires turn off and cross a small bridge to get to the carpark.
Thermals would be good, and bring a jacket if raining.

Oh my god after hearing you guys talk about Outward Bound, The Big Dipper, wanted to see what it was all about and went out there today! Oh my god! I need to grow some kahunas me thinks! It was pretty sandy on that big uphill! Downhill was okay, but that uphill sure was hard. Well hard to walk up while other people had to get my bike up. Guess will have to go back and try, try, try again!

apparently the big dipper area was really cut up, it hasnt rained lots for a while, and that area is quite exposed, so rutted up at the bottom and couldnt get a run up. i folded the front end about 3 times going down the hill on the other side of the dipper

If its pissing wet and miserably cold:cold: I will give it a miss- Ive had 3 days on the bikes this week and its only wednesday! Im out again in the morning at 7am:scooter:
We took a yz down there a few weeks ago. The wires and gutbuster is only 15k approx so gas should be fine. I would soften up the suspension on the YZ as much as possible...some of the rock sections are tricky and if you bounce off something the wrong way 'cause your forks are too stiff you can get off balance, loose momentum and once you stop getting moving again can be difficult. I would also recommend a new or near new soft compound tyre...the rocks will chew it up but on that sort of track you need it. My new Mich S12 was pretty stuffed (one side at least) after one loop of the wires and the wires and gutbuster the next week. About 20k maybe!
I can also recommend from personal experience to make sure your headlight is working, and when I do it next time I'm taking a backup headlamp too. A couple of guys got stuck in a few places and a tea kettle overheating 450 delayed us enough for it to get dark. Riding when you can't see sucks all the fun out of it.
Wish I could do it this time but I'm flying out to Aus that night. Have a good one guys!
honda_power
24th June 2009, 22:26
its 15k long and takes until dark?!
cheers for the advice, will do that... suspension is set quite hard at the mo.
I was thinking one of those eXTra's... they last last forever and get decent grip at 8 or so psi

I was thinking one of those eXTra's... they last last forever and get decent grip at 8 or so psi
I went in to Triple X to get some Pirrelli Scorpion extras and came out with their next soft tyre down the mid soft Scorpian XC. I originally wanted the lasting of the extra but Steve said this would last really good and grip much better! Been out to Thunder and The sandpit 3 times. The roots usually start to have a go at them but they've still got the manufacturing nipples on, even in the centre knobs and all still square and sharp. I'm very impressed with the grip as well!
The S12 I had on before shit itself in about 6 rides. I think they produced a bad batch as well.
BTW: Don't go to 8psi unless you have heavy duty tubes.
Good vid thanks Jt looked dryish though! But still managable I reckon!
I thought the eXTra was a dual sport knob tyre?...e.g. a tyre that would not be destroyed on tarmac? Pirelli states it is for all conditions...hard med soft. I would worry about how much traction I could get with it especially on a track like the wires (or any offroad during winter really)
Here is the Doc info sheet for the tracks for anyone interested.

You jokers willing to take on the wires in the wet are tops in my book. I'm afraid and too unfit for mucho bike manhandling. I'll wait to hear the reports, take plenty of pics!
Just watch those Pirelli Xtras with low pressures, ran mine at 8 psi and cords came apart inside tire, was close to a snakebite flat (even with HD tube). Have noticed I'm not the only one to have had this happen, still a good tyre though. S12s and rocks/hard stuff are a bad combo.

After yesterday we need to be starting at 09.00 to allow for getting stuck and de-watering bikes and dragging bikes out of bottomless ruts, There has been some heavy traffic with drilling up there, so the track is cut up with some deep bog holes and the water has given the gut buster a good hammering can all 2 smokers bring a spare plug.
As for depth of water allow up to the top of your rear sprocket and if you take the wrong line seat height  so any 4 strokes need to put the breather pipes up.
Otherwise should be a good ride.
And its $5 for the DOC box and well worth it.
Will see everyone who is going on Sunday.

The loop is ok but the gut buster is were it gets interesting there are about 5-7 rivers to cross and if they are up :shit: because there isn’t no other way to go, it just depends on your ability and fitness more than anything.

look for the crank case breathers normally a 3/8 - 1/2 inch black hose that comes outa the top of the motor or gear box, On a 2 banger if it has one it will be outa thee box some are feed straight to the air box already its the breathers that as on most modern 4s bleed out round the lower sub frame yah should move for river crossins if you stall and have to restart you can suck in water.

exactly my point lol! You gotta help us all out mang :2thumbsup
You're scaring me now, so you just needed lights to get out? I thought some of the bikes were fuked?
We hadn't done the gutbuster before, I was clearing most sections fine but I had to go back and help the other guys a lot. The slow going overheated a 450 constantly which caused a few delays while we waited for it to cool down. I flipped the bike over on a downhill which despite my barkbusters broke my front brake lever. I thought I was screwed right there cause you really need front brakes on that downhill. Thankfully we had a spare lever. All of these little things added up to about making us about 30 minutes short of light. As it got dark we had to slow down more as it got pretty dangerous. I had to go through a section first, the guy with the light was behind me and I couldn't really see the trail. I thought it went left but it went right so I went down a bank. At that point we called it and decided to walk out. It turned out that the rest of the track was pretty easy from there (about 3km). When we came back in the morning it was about 20 minutes ride. With hindsight, the ride was not too difficult and with a working headlight it would not have been a problem.

I think I know the one you mean, I was pushing up there too for a bit. Those sections are going to be much the same difficulty tomorrow anyway, they stayed wet and slippery when it was a dry day too. I think in that section I was trying to stay out of the rut on the right hand side as the bank was right there cutting down on the room. I had one of the other guys go up in the rut and he found it and easier line.

Well, im back... dont know where the rest of the crew are. Awesome ride, give it a go guys, sure its hard but its not impossable like people are making out.
Everyone turned up around 9, 2 groups, Chris and his mates, and the rest of us.
First section was easy. Few deepish holes, nothing that bad.
Came to a huge hole with a easy track cut around the side, i ploughed straight into the hole, up to the shrouds in this quick-sand kinda shit, barely made it out. Made the seat bloody slippery, was almost impossable to stay on the bike under hard acceleration.
The next few K was just mudholes and slippery rock tracks. Good fun.
Chris and his buddys passed us when we were pulling each other out of a shithole. I got a bit of a lead on the group for the next 5 or so k's,thought i could hear a bike a bit behind me, so i kept on going without stopping. Turned out that bike was one of chris's mates in front of me, I caught him on that crazy rock hill. Waited at the top of that for what seemed like ages, got too cold so I kept on riding. Also broke my brake lever, so I didnt do the hard track with all the warning signs.
What happened to everyone, i dont know, i guess we will find out tonight
If your gonna do it, do it in the wet. Was great. As long as you use your brain you can avoid almost all deep holes

I have ridden in both the summer and winter up there and the slippery rocks are still slippery in the summer. That place never really dries out.
Yep you are right Danger.......the real fun bit is the Gut Buster.
I remember the first time I rode around it you would look back at what you had just ridden and think man bikes can go some amazing places
Have been thinking about those guys riding the Gut Buster with the weather like it is today. The river crossing will be very interesting to say the least.
The reports and photos will tell a tale I bet.

yeah on the sign it says once you go down you cant get back, so i thought wasnt a good idea to attack it with no front brakes - i use them more than most people... my first 2 bikes never had back brakes, i guess its sort af a habit.
Was still real fun, the clay wasnt bad but the rock downhills were very slippery.
First time riding the yz on any sort of trail. What a great bike.
Def gonna start doing more real riding. Even without the gutbuster I enjoyed myself much more than jumping the same ramp all day.

Was a good ride and glad I did the gut buster again, at 1st it was looking dicey with huge ruts where our foot pegs were, getting well stuck on, that section took way longer than in the dry but otherwise sweet as. Yeah good goin Courts!

Couldn't get much wetter than it was today thats for sure. Daff reckons another 1/2 hour and the rivers would have been impassable. Conditions where tough but not stupidly silly. Daff said it doesn't get much harder in there.
That was my first go at wires and we went around Twice! (they scared us off doing the gutbuster in those conditions). Had been pissing down the whole time and the second time around Wires conditions where much worse with rivers running down all the ruts. Getting a bit knackered second time round so we bypassed that bog. I think?? One of the boys said first time they did the loop it took 3 hours. We did 1hour 20 then again for a total of about 2 hours 45 in my gauge. That of coarse is only when the wheel is turning so doesn't include the 20 very hard mins pulling my Husaberg mates bike outa a bog because he spotted an EASY route LOL!!! (Shit man thats much tougher than the riding!) And all the other pauses to help out. Got back to the carpark and Daff and the three that went with him only came in about 20 mins after we got back the second time around, so we got nearly as much riding in, so thats good for our first time out.
The bike went bloody marvelous I'm fricken wrapped in it!! I made it round twice which I'm pleased with. Rode much better second time round in worse conditions. Was it a good day shit yes!! Goin back to do the gut buster when the scary leave your bike behind stories because of the rivers are over!
Yeh thats me in the vid thought I'd try the middle but my front hit the vertical face on the other side and just stopped. Trust rupe to get my worst moment, AND laugh in the background!! LOL!!! Did ya see how deep that muddy water was!! Freckin good fun team effort I reckon! So glad I went!!
Thanks a bunch Daff for showing the seven of us round the wires track some for our first time!

i tend to get carried away in races, work my way up, push too hard then dnf. Either that or bike failure.
I didnt really try to keep up with him, He was just stuck in the rock garden. Who knows, he could have had a rest stop before i caught him
That place is epic, thanks for showing us round.
Didn't do the gutbuster as was put off by all the talk of big rivers, leaving bikes till the next day, plus we were really cold. So just did the wires loop twice, save it till next time. That was Reckless and the guy I took that got stuck in that sinking silt, horrible stuff, not too bad when people are there to help pull the bike out.
Got a couple of little video clips of that deep bog, will put them up in a bit.
Damn wish I went now!
Although had a good time at sandpit with Climntie and kids

Probably seems a bit cruel putting that vid of you up Rick, but is was the second time round, and deeper. Anyone thinking they could just snot through it would have been wrong, you rode really well mate to get through some tough bits on that second time, even if you were on a shitty old KTM!

The first time I did it that rut part was pretty easy, must be the rain and all the people doing it now ;) that made them so deep. Yeah I was thinking about turning back then as it was so hard going, but after that part it wasn't too bad.
Oo shit yea lucky, that would be the trail you want to take tools on!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWrzyhg51DI - Daniel doing the hillclimb
That was where we got through just as it was getting dark...there was no rut to speak of when we did it but it was a lot less damp. I did that tree root section a bit further on in the dark. Daff told me there was an easy way around it that I thought I missed in the dark, but from what people have said here maybe not.
That commentary in the second video was very similar to what the guys were saying to me but I hadn't done it before either:
"you sure this is the bloody gutbuster"
"you said this would be no problem"
"f$#kn rocks"
"Bastard"
How deep were the river crossings? I've been wondering what they get like after heavy rain and how high they get compared to when I did it.

No worries! I'm gonna invest in a helmet cam at some stage. I would have taken more footage of us climbing through the rock gardens etc, but it was fairly hard having completely caked gloves. And the camera was soaked to lol~
Really looking forward to doing gutbuster in reverse, should be sick.

I'm keen to try it in reverse too...I'm off to Hawaii tomorrow for work for a couple of weeks but I'll do the gutbuster one way or the other when I get back. There are no dirt bike tour businesses in Maui but I found a guy to take me on a private dirt bike tour (rent one of his bikes and ride all day) so I'm packing my dirt bike gear! :Punk:
