View Full Version : Newbie Easter Ride - All welcome

limmy

With the long weekend coming up I thought it would be nice a great time to go for a cruise and also get to meet some of the other new riders. This is intended to be a slow to medium pace ride. Of course the big boys are welcome to come a long as well.

Personally I was thinking about making a trip down SH22 since I've heard from a few of the other guys that its a good ride but am open to suggestions. Maybe up Old North Road and loop back through the Shore? Or a ride to Thames (maybe not that far) along the coastal route through Maraetai, Whitford, Kaiau etc.

I'm going to Pukekohe for the track day on Saturday but I can go any of the other days. I was thinking bout doing it on Sunday or Friday but if all the shops are closed then this could be a hassle ie. No food, maybe no gas etc.

So don't be shy and lets see a show of hands of people that are interested.

(Please someone put their hands up...its me first attempt at organizing a ride.)

Yeah mate i'll be keen to ride with some other newbies. might be able to keep up with someone that way.

I would like to do the Old North and over to the shore loop, sounds good.
Sunday is good for me too, also there will be less traffic [ hopefully] as it is right in the middle of the long w/end

I'm 100/120 km/h licence saving mode at the moment, but still keen for a cruise.
Time/Meeting place ?

licence saving is good.

Sounds like its Sunday then. Old North Road isn't a busy road anyway so we should be fine. Its the long weekend I think i'll probably be too lazy to try to push hard.

Yea. would be nice to not be the last one in the pack for once. haha.

How bout meeting up at Westgate. I think there's a gas station there after you get off the off ramp. How does 10am sound? Morning rides are my thing. Don't like riding in the afternoon heat with all my gear.

Ah yes, but it's not about how much power it delivers but how it delivers it. In the case of a Guzzi, it's delivered in style.:yeah:

I'll see what happens, I might be up for a blat on Old North et al - I recall what happened on my last MR organised ride down 22, so I might give that option a pass..

Oh, and I'll have the triple R CBR there. The kick start conversion kit has really made a difference to the sprung weight..

If any of you guys are keen, there's a cross country on just past Wellsford (www.rmcc.co.nz) - nah, not to take your bikes on, just something to go look at for a bit (plus a good ride up there). I'd suggest there's some gravel involved getting to wherever they're holding it, though.

Mate that's MR talking about a "wild" ride......

So it will be a fasssstttttttt to faaaaaccccckkkiiiing fassssssssssttttttttt ride

Please don't misunderstand me people.

I didn't say that the ride was going to be wild. I just meant road riding generally has the danger element involved in it more than racing on the track, so it'll just get my mind more prepared for the track. Because I think I will be more prepared to face my fears that way. I am just going to do my own thing, just like I do on every other rides.

It shouldn't matter what speed I go at to the others. I stop at intersections anyway and don't mind waiting at all. Only when I come across some one with a similar pace, I enjoy riding together.

I just like group rides cause you get company at the stops.

I am working on Saturday so if any of yous want to come with me, please do make your way to the Papakura Autobhan at 9, for a coffee before a great day's riding.

Didn't mean anything in a condescending way........ it's just that you aren't exactly the slowest rider out there.

And I wondered how appropriate it would be for a group of newbies tagging along with a racer out to get some practice.

Anyway either case...... I'll only be there at the start......see you's soon:niceone:

Hey,
Sorry if anyone turned back to look for me. I headed home after Waimaku.
Went over some nasty corugations and ripped some tendons in me busted hip.
Could not catch up to anyone to say I was going back because as you can guess- it was agony on every bump.
I generally expect the old bike, not the body to break down.
The specialist said last week I could try walking a little, guess he did not figure on Old North Rd and ancient suspension though. :ride:
Hope everybody had a good safe ride, the speed was perfect for me and I am bummed out I could not continue. Always next time.

Sorry to hear about the hip Dodgyiti. Frosty did take a run back down Old North Rd to check you were OK, but when he didn't find you we made a guess that the hip may have played up?

Nice looking restoration job on the Guzzi by the way. I'll have to let my mate with the V50 know what he has to aim for with his restoration work! :niceone:

We had an enjoyable ride up to Mangawhai for lunch, generally within licence-keeping speeds. However the riding gods decided that one blown head gasket would be the price for a nice day. Frosty is saving the day again by picking up the bike and rider from just south of Wellsford in his van. That man deserves a DB (or beer of choice!) :apint:

SPman
27th March 2005, 17:19
And a big up to Sparky,:niceone: for giving me a hand at Mangawhai, when, on leaving, I discovered a decided lack of power! Thought it was the key but discovered the battery was dead flat! Key is now so worn, it must have flicked the ignition back on as I took it out. I didnt notice, but Crashe said something about someones lights on...........
After cutting the ignition lead and discovering it was a flat battery.......Sparky swapped his battery, started my bike then we swapped batteries back....and I was back on my vibrating way. Well done that man!:2thumbsup:drinknsin
So, managed to get to Mangawhai and lunch, without actually riding with anyone else....is that good ...or just antisocial

crashe
27th March 2005, 19:00
SPman.... yep I did yell out your lights were on... but ya thought it was ya park lights...lol... oh well at least ya got home safe and sound...

After finding out where he was, I rode down to tell our friend with the blown head gasket that Frosty was on his way... I found him 6.7km down the road.... lying on the side of the road having a wee nap...lol.

So I whipped back to the garage and got him some water to drink and a paper to read while he waited for Frosty... I left him at 3.30pm...it was so hot out there on the side of the road.
So after that I shot home down SH1 and as I turned off Constellation Drive I could here a clunking noise.. stopped the bike and discovered that I had lost 2 screws holding the chain guard on were missing so I took the last screw off....

I called into Frosty's to let him know where to find our friend.... and that his cell ph was off.

When I got home, I decided to clean my chain and relube it...

Well horror of horrors... I have discovered 4 broken spokes and some of the the others are loose..

So my question is where is the cheapist place to get this fixed....
and how long will it take???? and what sort of cost???

I live in west Auckland.

The pace of the ride was perfect. The roads were brilliant and the SUN... was shining.... :Punk:

The best thing about the ride today was the senior riders taking care of the junior riders. Frosty would make sure nobody was left behind. This is really good as it gives newbies the confidence to go on a group ride. I hope more people will join next time.

No, wouldn't have been Mike L, he rides a real bike - It was me on the RRR.

Another piece of advice: Pay attention to the condition of the bike belonging to the rider offering tips. If it looks like mine then take everything said with a grain of salt. <_< (http://misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=3#)

I hope those lines I was showing you did help somewhat. There's heaps written about good lines here, and so far I think getting my lines sorted been the biggest breakthrough I've had in safety and enjoyment of my riding.

Well that was an interesting day! Got up and it was raining so thought no I won't go. Sat around for a while and the sun came out so quickly threw some gear together and met every one at Westgate.
Cool to see so many 250's. And OHHHHHHH that Guzzi!!!(drool)
Frosty led the way and sat at a nice pace and we all enjoyed the ride, what a great road!!! I'll have to do that one more often. At Wellsford we had El Dopa's bike steaming and Limmy's bike with a busted muffler!! So some repairs with cableties got the muffler sorted (did it make it home Limmy???) and some water for the steamer. El Dopa left us to go home the short way and we all headed of to Mangawhai. Another great road! We even made it through the SCARY corner Frosty warned us about. We all had a great lunch with Live music to boot. So we're all ready to go back to Wellsford for fuel. some would go back along HW16 and some HW1.
My bike doing it ususal trick of taking it's time to start (read me pushing!) so everybody had disappeared, no worries we'll regroup at the refueling stop, glance back at the carpark to see SPMan fiddling with his bike so being the nosey person I am, I stop and park. Help him with the bike and were off( See his reort re battery). By then I'd spoken with Frosty to let him know we were OK (yes I think we need more cellphone numbers, maybe a members list on here somewhere??) Found ElDopa on the side of the road past Wellsford and stopped for a chat. Thought I keep him company whilst we wait for Frosty to come back.
That fellow deserves a medal!! He dropped his kid of at Mangawai Heads, went home, unloaded his van from yesterdays racing, 2 bikes and gear, drove back to Wellsford in horrible traffic with his wife in the car following, found us and gave us the van!!! So we loaded both bikes into the van. He then left with his wife to pick up his boy!!!!
So there we were taking Frosty's van back down HW16 as Frosty told us that HW1 was chockka with traffic. Dropped the busted bike in Westharbour at the mechanics who was expecting us as Frosty had arranged it for Richard. Unloaded bikes Richard went home in the van and I jumped back on my bike and rode home (just in time for my 10 o'clock "L" plate curfew) :msn-wink:
Yeah Richard I made it with the fuel just turned on reserve at the Manukau offramp (230km on 2 wheels and ???100Km orso on 4)
And Crashe, I hope you get the bike sorted soon, glad to see you made it home safe.
Well long story ay but apart from all that I had a great day, loved the ride and the company so thanks people see you all next time.
Oh yeah ofcourse a few pic's :msn-wink:

woow --what a day. I got home about an hour ago.
El dopa's bike is in good hands -

we started out with 14 bikes and 15 bikers at westgate shell.
The great thing was other than mechanical failures everything went well.
It was really fantastic to see the improvement in the newbees riding as the day went on. Two I was particularly watching were el dopa and sparkie. Both of you guys are getting a heck of a lot smoother and more relaxed on your bikes.fantastic to see :2thumbsup
despite the jabs in the ribs from baby bikie and his shouts of go faster daddy I was happy to doddle along at a slow pace with occasional sqirts on my favorite sections of the road.

Well, that was a long day. The morning was great. The afternoon dragged a bit.....

It looks like the headgasket blew just before we got to Wellsford. I tried nursing it back to Auckland after you lot went on to Mangawhai, but I only got a few K down SH1 before my crotch was wreathed in steam and squirting a foul-smelling green liquid (hold yourselves back, ladies).

Anyhow, cutting a long story short, I was sitting on the side of the road for the afternoon waiting for Frosty and his van. I finally got back home about 9.00 last night. My wife was not best amused (the bike wasn't the only thing that blew a head gasket yesterday).

BIG thanks, in no particular order, to:

Frosty, for sorting out the van AND a mechanic.

Sparky, for keeping me company for about three hours at the side of the road.

Crashe, for dropping off supplies and getting info to Frosty and others as needed.

And the nice lady cop who stopped three times to make sure help was on the way.

Nice to meet you all, even if I won't remember your names. I'll see you all next time.

Time to get my full and upgrade to a decent bike, I think.

EDIT: One reason the missus was so pissed off is because she thought we were down in Clevedon, and as she hadn't heard from me for a while (flat phone battery), she assumed the worst. My condolences to all who were involved.

Sparky, thanks for the cableties. those things are life savers. I'm out to get a bunch when i can. I checked my bike when i got home the can had totally snapped in half. the only thing that was holding it together was the tape and the ties.

Frosty, I'll be trying to find parts for my bike today and will bring that leaver back to you tonight. Didn't have a car yesterday so couldn't drop it by earlier.

Also really glad that the other new riders enjoyed themselves.

Dogdyity...get well soon...and get a bike with better suspension. :p
