View Full Version : Power and Corruption

Hello everybody. My name is Gareth, and I am a litre bike addict.

The progression in motorcycle ownership is that you usually go from a smaller capacity bike, on to a larger capacity bike, or perhaps on to a newer more powerful version of the bike you had previously.

Up until the beginning of the year that's how it was for me. I started on a Vespa Super 150, then went on to a couple of Suzuki GF250's, I got a ZXR250A when I had my restricted before moving on to a 2001 R6 when I got my full. The next bike I owned is sometime's called the 'king of sportsbikes' - a GSXR1000.

My GSXR1000K3 had a healthy 150hp+ at the rear wheel, aftermarket suspension, a tasty sounding exhaust, and overall it pretty much rocked my world for the year or so that I rode it. It was then that I decided to go back to university and to do so I had to clear my debts, this meant selling the beast and getting a commuter.

I ended up with a 1985 Honda CB650 'Luxury Custom'. Despite being a 'cool' bike and doing it's job of commuting with the occasional open road ride it has left me fiending for that almighty rush of power that the GSXR1000 had, the ability to turn a shit day at work into an exciting and adrenalin filled commute home. The power to get from 50kmh to well over the speed limit and back down again before the end of a motorway onramp. Lifting the front wheel in any of the first three gears on demand, and generally just being a kickass hooligan machine.

I want to have my cake and eat it too. I need to feed the addiction.

I think I need to get another GSXR1000! :2guns:

First you must want to help yourself...

I can see where you are coming form and trying to go to BUT what you actually need is a different syyle of bike to help get your feet back on the ground.

The hunger for more and more power is an expensive habit to try and feed.

How about getting a Cruiser as a 'life saving' alternative?

The CB650 essentially is a 'cruiser' - 19in front, 18in rear, 50hp, wide bars, upright seating position.

I think what I need is that madness without the danger. For things to be exciting on the CB650 you need to either be pushing it pretty hard, or doing something stupid. On a litre bike you open the throttle and the exhaust note pretty much screams "THIS, IS, MADNESS!!!".

Oops - I didn't realise.

I would find 50hp quite frustrating after a sports bike.

How about an M109 ?

Yeh, but I'm a student, so $20k+ is a bit out of my budget! Plenty of GSXR1000K3/K4's on trademe for under $8k!

You need to go racing.....

This has crossed my mind. I'm dead keen on getting Ozzy27 to hook me up a Yamaha YZF-R4.5 in the not too distant future!

There is no 12 step programme for the Litre high...

http://www.themotorcyclereview.com/the-rant/381-the-liter-high?showall=1

This is why Scoot, despite promising Frosty a dozen times, is still sitting in my garage surround by pints. The best things come in litre containers. Bungy jumping is boring in comarison.

There is only one course of action. Your bank manager will be slutted at you, but you have to live...

Hi mate, how about buying a 600 or 1000 track bike and go racing!!
Not quite what your talking about re a hoon of a commute home but still a buzz all the same :niceone:
Got to be a cheaper way to go and less likley to have find the funds for a speeding fine and keep the commute scoot.

I must say that I tempted to go for a 1000GSXR next time, but at my age (57) I am a little concerned that much power may get me into trouble. The SV has good power but comes on it much more controllable way.
I fanatize about GSXR1000 acceleration, what a blast aye!
Id probably ride in low mode all day , cant see the point in that though.
I feel that a 1000 GSXR is on my bucket list....very tempting

Go for it! My old boy has a gsxr1000 (ive borrowed it and its now in aussie) but he got his knee down at taupo and he is 57! He was running around taupo in the 1.45 bracket which is pretty fast

A gixxer isnt a hooligans bike. Its a penis extension machine.

Far better hooliganism can be achieved on a motard - every set of lights you can wheelstand away, and not break the speed limit!, you can bounce up and down and around curbs and bus stops, do stoppies with ease and comfort, lock up the rear and swing it right round to do tight turns etc.

Street/speed triples are pretty hooliganish lol
